Farmers Have Narrow Escapes.
As exclusively related In the Her-1
aid yesterday. Rancher Dolling or
Eagle Valley, had his wagon and
team ot two horses swept from him
br a Hood day before yesterday,
while on his way to Baker City. The
wagon was completely demolished,
both horses were drowned and the
rancher's son and son-ln-Iaw. who
were with htm had a narrow escape
for their lives.
One of the horses was carried a
mile down stream and the other's
stopping place Is unknown. One of
the men was- carried by the flood a
quarter of a mile and was rescued
from an entanglement with the
wrecked wagon In almost drowned
condition.
The three mon were comlne to
Baker City in a llsut. two-horse
spring wagon, and when they reach
ed Buckler creek, about 14 miles
from this place they found it a
roaring torrent. A drove of cattle
had just preceded them, and not
knowing the stream thought it safe.
It was at least 14 feet deep and the
mad waters were rushing down the
mill-tall-like channel like a cataract.
They drove Into the place innocently
in plain view of the man who
crossed with the cattle, and who did
not give them a word of warning.

Short-Weight Butter Rules.
State Pure Food Inspector ST5
Phersoc has discovered that the
large majority ot the butter sold ht
Boise is under weight.
"Must of the so-caHed posed pack
ages of butter soW in Boise weight
14 ounces." said the Inspector "They
vary between 13 and 15 ounces, bat
practically none is full weight."
The inspector stated h proposed
to take some action in the matter
He was ot the opinion that the pare
food law contemplated the prosecu
tion of those who seil dairy products
under weight br short measure, as
well as the prosecution of those who
sell impure products.
The enabling act reads In part:
"An ai-t regulating the manufacture
and sale of food, dairy and oil prod
ucts: to prevent deception or fraud
in the sale ot the same or Imitation
thereof." etc
The inspector takes the position
that to sell a dairy product under
weight comes under the head ef
fraud and he proposes to take steps
to correct the shortage. Boise Cap

Dan Cotter everbody knows Dan

About four feet of new snow had

The bottom snow was hard and

Mr. Cotjiir had an experience
while coming out that he will not
soon forget. He left Resort In the

vicinity of Little Lakes station,
night had fallen, and he was tranble
