Is there a plan on foot to mal;o Coour d'Aleno City a small-sized Monte Carlo? Developments broiifilit to the surface the last tow days would Indicate It. Such nn effort was made early last summer, but there was then and Is now a "closed town" element In power which frus trated tho attempts of Spokane and other gambling men to turn the fa mous summer resort Into the con templated center of tho northwest. Tho matter seems now to have again been taken up by the local and coast sporting men. Action has been hastened by tho fact that tho beau tiful little pleasure resort Is to have another election. A determined ef fort will Immediately be mnde to de feat the old "closed town" element at the coming election and put men In the council who will not Insist that tho town be closed to the sporting element. The Press has It on the best of authority that sporting men of that summer resort have commu nicated with local people to bbtaln assistance with which to fight the re-election of the party now in power. All tho num erous bridges In the Cascade and Itocky mountains on that road have been torn down or repaired, and all wooden structures replaced with steel bridges which cannot be carried away by land and snow slides or undermined by freshetB and thaws. Perhaps the most disastrous sec tion of the entire Great Northern system last year was that district near Uonners Ferry where the Koot enai river dealt out disaster follow ing disaster, last spring, accompa nied by loss and wreckage of equip ment and loss of life. So great was the repeated catastrophes that at one time the system had one engine In J FARMERS ARE HOLDING ON TO THEIR WHEAT. Armour's Actions Are Shady Just at Present Wheatmd Are Wonder Ing Whether He Is Buying or Sell ing Shortage in July Options Will Be the Next Attraction on the Pit. Portland, Feb, 23. The farmers and warehouse men are holding wheat tighter than ever, and the ad vance of May option to in Chicago did not make them sell any faster. The wheat market In this city is quite different from the one In Chi cago and other Eastern cities, Inns much as the markets there are main ly speculative and the high prices of the nast few weeks have not been occasioned by the ' larger demand for milling purposes. In this city the demand always makes the prlce the only outsldu markets causing any tendency 'n 1 this market being Liverpool, which has not shown the large advances recently made In Chicago. ' Just whether Armour Is buying or selling now Is the principal gossip among the traders. The Indications are, however, that ' he Is on both sides of the market, 'supporting the price when It threatens to become too weak and bearing It down when It tries to fly too far upward. There seems to be a large short age In Jhe July option, and this one win pronauiy ue the center or at traction during the week. No changes today, owing to the holldiv yesterday.
