Unusual Optimism for a Pesslmea tic Politician Arraigns the Op position for Extravanant Philip pine Policy Strong Leadership is the Hope of His Party. The Saturday Evening Poat of this week contains an able article from ex-Prosldcnt Cleveland on tho need of union and organization among democrats. Mr. Cleveland's optimism is o an unusual order for him. Ho says: "I am one of those," ho writes, "who believes that there is an op portunity for democratic success in coming presidential election. "Though attachment for the party in which I am enlisted and an in tense desire for Its ascondancy makes such a belief exceedingly welcome, they certainly do not cre ate it It is built upon an unshaken and abiding trust In the patriotism and intelligence of my fellow coun trymen "This is no time for cunning fin esse nor for the use of words that conceal intentions or carry a double meaning. Tho democratic party has a message to send to its followers and to the masses of the American people. Let that message be ex pressed in language easily under stood, unconfused by evasion and untouched by the taint of Jugglery Obsolete issues and questions no longer challenging public Interest should be manfully abandoned." Mr Cleveland urges tariff reform pleads for economy in tho expendi ture of public money and charges the opposition with having made promises and broken them. He arraigns the administration's Philip pine policy. Mr. Cleveland con cludes as follows: 'At such a time as this the demo cratic party cannot with honor un dertake the battle of the people ex cept under a leader that not only represents its best traditions and purposes, but fully realizes what is meant by the tremendous issue of the conflict; and his selection should not depend upon so Bmall a consideration as the locality whence he comes. ' The i democracy's opportunity is already in sight, but only in a cam paign waged in reliance on the peo ple's love of country and devotion and national morality, under leader ship that personifies the sentiments. would be found democracy's hope." i To sweeten, To refresh, To cleanse the system, Effectually tigmr) and Gently; Wit There is only one Genuine Syrup of Figs; to get its bene ficial effects Dispels colds i, headaches wkJ bilious or cot stipated; ' For men, and chudrea; Acts best oi the kidneys and liver stomach f bowels; Always buy tbe genuine Manufactured by tfe LoMisville, Ky. flGSYRUPft Sw Francisco, C&l. flewYorkY.
