Horse Thieves at work.
1'ioscott, Feb. 4. A gang of
horse thieves have been operating
extensively In tho Prescott neighbor
hood during the, past two weeks.
Almost every day tho farmers have
been reporting the loss of some of
their most valuable horses, and
there has absolutely been no clue
to tho thieves.
Last Saturday night Peter Han
son, a farmer residing north of Pres
cott had six of his finest horses
stolen.
Abraham Pettyjohn lost a fine
i mule several weeks ago and many
ottier tanners' horses are missing.
The farmers residing on the upper
flat near Clyde also lost a number
ol' animals.

Death of an Old Settler.
Tho funeral of Mrs. Slnah Master
son, who dletl Monday morning at
her residence three and one-half
miles north or the city, will take
place tomorrow afternoon at 2
o'clock from the residence of her
daughter, Mrs, Emma J. McMamts
of 29 Chestnut street.
Mrs. Masterson had been a resi
dent of Walla Walla county since
18(18, coming here Ttom the Willam
ette valley or Oregon. She was born
in Iowa in 1S-I5 and clossed the
plains in 1804. She was married
in 1809. Of eight children, four

The Dalles, Feb. 4. Under his
real name or Earnest Papmaul, the
muchly married man, known to Tho
Dalles people as "Harry Mason,"
pleaded guilty to the charge or big
amy before Judge Bradshaw this
morning, and was sentenced to two
years In the stale penitentiary.

Reports from the county are to
the effect that the ground Is now
frozen nine inches deep. The Ice
on the pond Is about six Inches

ments of flour from Portland to the
Orient were given a good start yes
terday evening, when the Indrnsam
ha cleared tor Japan and China.
Among other miscellaneous freight,
she had on board G9,629 barrels of
Hour, tho largest quatlty of that
foodstuff the vessel ever carried, It
ranks as the third largest flour car
go that ever left the Columbia river,
only being exceeded .by those taken
out in the Algoa and the Indrapura
during the present season.
Tho Hour Is valued at $214,CC4.40,
and goes to Yokohama, Kobe, MoJI,
Hongkong and Shanghai. The bal
ance or the cargo consists of CM
packages of groceries, one box of
sporting goods, three sacks or oats,
77 sacks or bran, 1,828 pieces of
rough lumber, 129 bales cotton flour
sacks, 1.1 packages or machinery,
200 boxes of apples, 250 cases or
cigarettes and 100 bales or sheeting.
Tho steamer sailed nt noon, and
under her 7,000-ton burden was
weighted down to a draught or only
2.1 feet and C Inches. It Is thought
probnblo that sho will Co able to get
to sea early tomorrow morning.
Captain W, K. Craven Is in com
