E. church. Is holding a revival meeting at Blue Mountain. J. E. Nichols went to Athena yes terday and assisted in the burial services of Mr. Augus McDonald. Columbia College Benefit. Yesterday the Bee Hive was closed all day preparing for the opening today. One-tenth of all the cash taken In today will be given to Columbia College. The trial is being held In the Presbyterian church and a large crowd was present at the opening this morning. The proceedings be gan with the reading of the bill of Information containing- tho charges against Mr. Elwood. Tho bill quoted at length flora the sermon which Mr. Elwood delivered on Sunday, June 21, 24 hours before the burn ing of the negro, on the subject, "Should the Murderer of Miss Helen Bishop Be Lynched"? The charges went on to state that even If the accused pastor did ,iot actually Incite hearers and readers r Ma Kormnn to riot, he was guilty of advocating violenco and disobedi ence to law, that his preacning irom a text from the Constitution of the United States was an act dishonor ing tho Bible, and that his sermon was In many respects contrary to the tenets of the Presbyterian church. Monday, January 18. tho following commltteo of business men met at the office ot -- Fast Oregonian and formed tho unknown number that will get tbo $100 rubber-tired buggy. The committee consisted of M. A. Rader, tho furniture man, E. T. Wade, tho real estate dealer, O, A. Bobbins, propilotor of tho Owl Tea House, Glenn Wlnslow tho Jowolor, and A. Kunkel, tho Implement man. Ten numbers from ono to naught were cut from a calendar. These numbers were toaled up In 10 differ ent envelopes by tho committee. Tho 10 envelopes were placed In a hat and thoroughly shuffled nnd shaken, Three members of tho committee then took out ono envelope each, which wore marked one, two, three, In tho order In which they wcro taken out. Theso threo envelopes wcro thou placed In a larger envelope and seal ed and a wnx seal placed on tho flap and delivered to tho chairman of tho committee, M, A. Rader to keep un til tho day tho buggy will bo drawn. Tho remaining soven envelopes con taining tho other numbers wore then burned in tho presence of tho com mlttee, thus Insuring an absolutely unknown number.
