Consecration Takes Place In New York The New Bishop Is 60 Years of Age, and a Man of Unusual and Recognized Ability Has Been Of. fered a Bishopric Twice Before, But Refused. New York, Jan 26. Surrounded by the bishops of tho Protestant Episcopal church, accompanied by a host of clergy and amid tho most elnborate ceremonial, the Rov. Dr. David II. Greer was consecrated as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese ot New York. Tho ceremony was !n St. Bartholomew's church, of which Dr. Greer Is rector. It was a little after 10 o'clock when tho bishop, led by Bishop Pot ter of New York, loft the parish house and proceeded across the small Inclosuro to tho church. Tho bishop-elect was escorted by his .presbyters, the Rev. Drs. Morgan Dlx anil W. R, Huntington, and be hind him camo the visiting clergy, and then the surpliced choir of the church, singing a processional. By the time the head of the procession entered Bartholomew's tho pews had been filled by members of the parish and visitors. Tho ceremony began with the reading of the prayer of tho morn ing. Then came a sermon by Bish op Doano of Albany. The ceremony of consecration followed, according to the tltual of tho church. The consecrators were Bishop Potter, Bishop Doane and Bishop Dudley of Kentucky. The Rt. Rev. David Hummell Greer was born In Wheeling, W. Va., in 1S44. Ho received his education at Washington College, Philadelphia', and the Protestant Episcopal Semi nary in Gambler, Ohio. Ho received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from Kenyon College and Brown University. In ISCfl ho was or dnlned. His first pastorate was at Clarksburg, W. Va where, although It was only a small country place. Dr. Greer achieved such prominence that he received a call to a charge In Covington, Ky.,. Then ho went to Grace church, Providence. There ho established his reputation as a preacher and organizer, and when. In 1888, the pulpit of the church of St. ; llnrtliolomew in this city became va cnnt he was asked to accept the rectorale. In 1897 Dr. Greer was 1 elected bishop coadjutor of Rhode I Island. He declined to accept the office. Four years later ho was I also elected bishop of the diocese of Western Massachusetts, but again I declined to accept.
