There were several other Idle mills In Dixie nnd Florence, but these 14 stamps wero practically all Uio quartz gold producers. A year .go there were 29 stamps In the Hump, 10 In Thunder Mountain nnd 20 on Crooked river. This year there ire 46 In nultalo Hump, 10 at Elk City, a roller mill equivalent to Ave stamps In Florence, a cyanide plant equal to 25 Btamps In the Seven Devils, extraction plant on Rapid river, equal to 10 stamps and 20 stamps on Crooked river. All those aro now or have been operated at a profit. Fourteen, 59 and 116 gold producing stamps is the growth or two years. But 1904 promises to discount them all. T.tero are 10 stamps on the road to the Jumbo mine In the Hump; tho Atlas mine is almost eei tain to have a 10-stamp mill, as is also 10 Lucky Lad; the Jewel in near creek is to have 10; It Is understood that the Hogan nn.i on Crooked river is to have 40 more;, tho Dewey mine six miles oast of Grangeville, is practically certain to have a cyanide plnnt equivalent to 25 stamps; one or two new mills are talked of In the rich Elk City district; it Is understood that tho Silver Klntr mill in Warren Is to be started up; and two or throe hundred stamps are to go to Thunder Mountain. It is a marvelous de velopment of the quartz mining in dustry In three years, nut the in dustry is even yet only in Its in fancy." Grangeville Standard. " SECOND-HAND DEALERS. V. 8TROIII.E. Spokane, Jan. 25. Fresh eggs aro held at a uniform price of w cents a dozen In nil the retail stores of the city now. Storage eggs and eastem eggs are quoted as low as 40 cerits In some places, but In many tney uriug i'o cents. xne wuuie- sale houses are almost out of the product and nearly all In the city ate in the uunds of retail dealers, who had a supply on hand before the shortage began. May Wheat High. Chicago, Jan. 25. On account f crippled wire service outside trading was light in the wheat pit today. The market opened weak, largely because of lower cables and large Argentine shipments. Another factor was a report or ad ditional rain in the southwest, ef- l'ectlvely breaking the long drouth in that section. May was a shade to 3f44c lower at 91'A to 91c. The sentiment among pit traders seemed to be decidedly bearish and they were Inclined to sell freely. During the first half' hour pricss declined rapidly and May was soon selling at 91 c. Open buying by the b e bull operator temporarily checked the downward tendency and some recovery was made. On every break the prominent lone would S'jnd In buying orders In an endeavor to support the market, but his efforts were of no avail. Prices continued to sink, until May touched 9u'4, a decline of 1 from the opening,, which was the" high point of the day. The close was weak, with May at 90c. July ranged between 81 and 83c, clos ing at 81 &C, a loss of lc for the day. Corn was subjected to about the same experience as wheat, with the possible exception that the pit crowd was less fearful of selling corn than wheat. Closing prices were weak at nearly the bottom fig ures, May c lower at iSVaQiWtc. RETAIL GROCERY PRICES.
