TERRIBLE CUTTING AFFAIR.
At the Boston Store, Where Prices
Have Been Slashed Beyond All Rec
ognition. The wind-up of the great clearance
sale of the Boston Store dry good3
slock has been commenced and the
remainder of the magnificent stock
of goods will bo rushed out before
February 1st, as the shoe department
will occupy the room after that date.
The goods that remain are all very
desirable articles and like the cup of
cofree, the sugar lias remained In the
bottom and will now be emptied out
In order to make the great sale
complete and dlsiose of the balance
of the stock the most terrific cutting
and slashing of prices ever heard of
In Eastern Oregon has been indulged
In and It takes but a song, compara
tively speaking, now to get the goods
Talking about practical economy
does not save money, so don't talk
about it but go straight to the Boston
Stole and avail yourself of this op
portunity to get goods at the shot-to-
pleces prices.
It will mean dollars to you and you
can't afford to let this one great
chance go by.
Evidence of the great reductions
made in prices can be gained by
reading the large advertisement on
the second page of this Issue.

The churches and Sunday schools
throughput the West are making .n
organized effort to have tne Sunday
closing amendment Incorporated in
to the bill before congress appropriat
ing money for tue Iewls and Clark
fair.
The Northwest Sabbath Associa
tion has sent out the following circu
lar, setting forth the objects of the
movement and giving the reasons for
attempting to attach tho "Sunday
closing" amendment to the bill.
.Ministers and Sunday school work
ers are circulating petitions and writ
ing letters to congressmen, asklnc for
the favorable consideration of the
matter, and it is honed bv them that
all features of tho fair will bo closed
on every Sunday during the entire
season.
The circular Is as follows:
"To tbe Citizens o the West and
Northwest: In 1903 a Lewis and
Clark exposition In honor of the ex
pedltlon of Merlweather Lewis and
William Clark, 100 years ago. is to
1 be held in Portland, Or A bill Is bo-
lore tne senate of the United Stnts
asking Tor an appropriation of $2,'
250,011(1, to aid In maklnc the celebra
tion an Imposing success; but as the
bill contains no condition for closing
the gates of wie exposition on the
lord's day, an amendment has been
offered to the effect that the approprl
atlon be granted on the same condb
tlon as that on which a similar grant
was made tho Louisiana Purchase Ex
position, viz., that the gates of the
Lewis and Clark exposition be closed
during the period of Its contlnuanco
on tne first day of the week. This
amendment Is known as the "Hawley
Piatt Amendment." The object of
this article Is to ask all persons who
read It to write at once (as prompt'
ness is necessary) to his or her sen
ator and representative In congress,
and to Hon. Henry E. Burnham, chair
man of the senate committee on in
dustrial expositions, and to Hon.
James T. Tawney, M. C, chairman
committee on industrial arts and ex
positions, urging them to support the
Hawley-Platt amendment to the Lewis
and Clark appropriation bill.

God's order Is only confusion.
A chaos of forces misspent
To him who, through lands of delusion.
Seeks rest In the Vale of Content.
The mainspring of being Is battle
For beauty; the gross must make r
For the fine; to Its musketry's rattle
The rose marches up through the clay.
Though the Illy look not on Us neighbor
With the envloua eyes of our state,
It chooses with Infinite labor.
Grows on and Is ever elate.
The germ of the oak from Us prison
Bursts forth with a savage delight,
And another Lord Proof has arisen
To challenge Lord Doubt In the fieht.
All nines of the Tentmaker'a tavern
Are shamed, by the worth of this one
That climbs from Its granite bound cavern
To the baptismal font of the sun.
One life Is the sum of all others.
Infolding the high and the low;
If we carry the cross for our brothers,
We must hew with the sword as we go.

What form of the army la best.
But the final reward of all merit
Is action, still action, not rest.
