The good citizen must love his country actively. A man can not live his life for himself or to himself alone He cannot be an Indifferent onlooker without being a positive evil. He must be an active co-operator. The way lies clearly in emphasizing the spiritual side of life. We pay a gre?t deal of attention to the physical and intellectual, but unless we have in our hearts a tender love and reverence for our own relicion we are not formed. There is a lack of reverence, a lack of love, a lack of fear of God. This Is the crying disease of society, here as elsewhere " Father .McSweeny. of Oakland f The big guns In the Orient have been cocked for some time, but no body dares pull the trigger. people. The coming spring will wit ness a greater volume of business and travel to Alaska than any previ ous year and steps should be taken to make the trip safe on any boat leaving the harbors of the Pacific Coast, so far as seaworthy vessels are concerned. It is impossible to con trol the storms or lessen the dangers of the ice fields of the Bering Sea, but both these recent disastrous ocean accidents have been occasioned by defects in the old boats themselves. The communication iietween the Pa cific Coast and Alaska Is to become closer as the northern territory is settled up and developed and the public sholud indignantly refuse .0 ride on any old tub set adrift In that trnde. It Portland's hotel room corres ponded to her hospitality she could shelter more eople than the railroads could haul to the Lewis and Clark tair. .s The peace utterances of Joe Simon regarding the Oregon factional fight, are not reassuring. Joe has spoken softly before while feeling the edge of his knife. Because Chief of Police Woydt, of sJpufcane. believed In enforcing the laws against vice and In crushing immorality in a city wherever he found it. be has been deposed. The prompt action of the council in responding to the call for better protection for the public in Pendleton theaters Is highly commendable. Peo ple may visit a fire-trap every night for a dozen years without a mishap nd yet a terrible accident might bap pen any night. Human life Is a aa ered thing to toy with. The East Oregonlan Is touched as ieeply as anyone with the thought f a legal execution, and the destruction of a life by law. It regrets the social system which legalizes murder. It believes that a criminal could be made to pay a greater penalty for lis crime by working at hard labor for Failing in. a disgusting attempt o "use" the city council for personal objects. Wednesday night, the Morn ing Tribune now Insults the mayor and members of the council, by mat ing a childish and sickening squeal because its dishonest efforts were fruitless, before that intelligent body of citizens. For 2i years the East Oregnnian has been -ue only real newspaper published in Pendleton, and the continued patronage granted It by successive city administrations despite the cheap efforts of mush room political sheets to make tools out of city councils, proves to every fair-minded citizen that although this paper has occupied the fielu ' alone. It has never abused a privilege or betrayed a trust. The city will continue to be conducted on the same intelligent ,.nes, as In the past, de-' spite such groveling tricksters who would convert" the municipal govern ment into a political grab-bag. The mayor ana council are to be com mended for the hard slap they admin-' Istered to this first attempt to 'touch" the tax-payers through them. ' The petitions asking for the direct primary amendment to be placed on the official ballot at the coming elec tion are expected to arrive at the office of the county clerk today. These petitions 'must be filed with the secre tary of state by February C. and ..he friends of this movement must lo3e no time. The petitions should be en ergetically circulated, by everybody who can spare the time. The amend ment should be voted on this year. The corrupting influence of the polit ical convention is more and more ap parent every year, and voters of every party are pushing this amendment, to give the sovereign citizen an equal chance with the politician, in nominat ing public servants. The amendment, If adopted, provides that primary elections shall be held in due time before each general or special elec tion, and that ever" qualified elector in the state shall vote at this primary election for his choice Qf candidate, to be nominated for the different nf. deeply as anyone with the thought of convention, and places the nomlnat- Drink DESCENT REAM uic mm, xor wie rema.naer 01 ms ,ng dlrec,y the nandg of life.
