The labor account for tho last two years has been greatly Increased by tho addition of another man nt the pump house and by tho extension work and Improvements done In tho past year or two. The Increase In the fuel account Is caused both hy the larger amount of water pumped Into tho reservoir. and by the raise In the price ot woou. Mr. Me Carty Is one of tho pioneer stock men of this county, and Is still In the front rank of tho cattlemen. Ho Is now feeding nearly a hundred bend on his Hutter Creek ranch, and they nro ready for tho market. Last week Mr. McCartv sold ISO head of steers to tho Northwestern meat company ot Portland for four cents a pound, and tho cattle aro now delivered. He was offered four and one-fourth cents by tho Union Meat company of Portland for future delivery, but refused tho offer, as It would have taken more of bis feed than tho gain would havo amounted to. This seems to bo In contradiction to the report that the beef market here would not range as high as four cents for anything but future de livered cattle. It seems that In some parts of the county, at least, the cattlemen are able to get some figure for their bef that will pay them for the feed put Into tho cat tle. It may he thnt tho cattle owned by Mr. MrCarty were of a better grade and In better condition than the common range cattle of fered on the market, but the fact remains that he found no difficulty In selling for the hlghwntor figure.
