Tho importance ot tho coming annual convontlon of tho NatIonaO,tve Stock association, which will tonvcno hero on January 12th, Is assuming greater importance as 'he t'mo approaches. The ques tion of forest reserves, arid lands, packing house combines and trans- portatton are matters which demand . immediate and declslvo action by the stoi-kuroKers of thU country. The necessity of somo Immediate action on tho land and forest reserve question Is recognized by President Iloosovelt, who has authorized Hon. Gilford l'inchot, chief forester of the United States, and Hon. F. H, Nov;, oil, chief engineer of tho departmont of geological survey, members of the recently appointed land commission, ic) attend this meeting for tho pur pose of ascertaining tho wishes of tha stock growers of the country. Theso two subjects will be made the feature of tho discussion on Thursday, the 14th of January, whan Hon. Hebor M. Wells of Utah. Dr. .1. R. Stubhs of Nevada and Hon. Thom as Haley of Oregon will represent the slockmen in the debate while Messrs. Plnchot and Newell will roproselit tho government. This discussion In It self will be of sufTlclont Importance to Justify every stockman In hearing It. These, with other dobates on the subject mentioned, will make the convention one of the most Interest ing In the history ot tho organiza tion. It Is tho desire of tho officers of the association that every delegate who has anything to say upon sub jects under consideration shall make himself known, and take part In the debates. New President. Hon. John V. Springer, who iias creditably served the association as nrpildent nlnco its organization In lt98, has authorized tho announce ment that he .positively will not ac cept a renomlnatlon for this position, his time as vice president of tho Con tinental Trust company and tho Con tinental Land and Cattlo company being taken up to such an extent that he Is prohibited from again favorably confclderlng this matter, much as he should like to. There nave been several sugges tions as to the man best fitted to take his place, and quite a number of prominent men have been mention ed, but It Is probable that when the time for the election of new officers arrives Ii will have resolved Itself In to one or two candidates. Hotel Accommodations. A rumor hns been circulated to the effc"t that hotel accommodations in Portland are limited. It has never been possible for the hotels of any one city to accommodate all the iMb gates and visitors who attend this convention, ana I jyisn to assure an who deslro to attend tho convention at Portland that there will bo ample accommodations provided for every one. Rates. As alieady advised, a rate of one "fare tor the round trip has been made trom nil points wltaln tho jurlsdlctl hi I of the Western Passenger assocla I tlon. Some delay has been exparl I enced in securing rates from lo.'al points In Oiegou, Washington ami .Montana, but a faro and a third was made on the 31st tilt. This was some what of a disappointment, as a rato of one faro had been expected. Tho latter would have been granted had It not been for the Northern Pacific Hallway company persistently hold ing out for a faro and a third In 'ho luce of the fact that they had prom ised several of tho niembors of the local committee to grant a one fare. The other lines entering Portland weie agreeablo to tho low rate, but thev could not grant It over the ob jection of tho Nortnein Pacific. Delegatus should remember that reduced rates aro -ranteu via the most direct loute to Portland. In the event any of them Intend making tho side irln. It is mine necessary tnat they should, when purchasing their tickets, advise their local agent u which route they deslro to return. On arriving at Portland tho delegates shoii d mmedlatcly go to neaoquar tors at tho Portland hotel and regis ter at our office, whero they will tie provided with badges, programs and coupon books for all entertainments.
