Utzke, of tnls city, who spent the past summer In Grant county, Oregon, made thrco locations which, olds fair to mako him a big mine, io noise uapltal News. It Is n beautiful auartz nronosltlon and assays which ho has had matlo snow that It contains high values. Ore from one of tho claims taken out at a depth of only 11 feel showed $17.50, $54.50 and $34.50 per ton. The leuge on mis claim Is 14 feet wide. Ore taken out at a depth of only four feet on one of tho other claims wont $6.50 and $7.75 per ton. Tho ledge on this Is 17 feet wide and lias every evldenco of permanency nnd gaining In value ns depth Is obtained. Tho mlno is only 16 miles distant from the Snmptcr road. A good wag on road leads from tho road to tho mine. Mr. Lltzke says there is an oxcollent mill site on tho property. There is an abundance of water and plenty of tlmuor, and convenient to a power plant for operating a mill. ho nas every confldenco that ho has made a big strike and will begin ear ly In the spring to do greater devel opment work. New Power for Baker. Tho big water wheels which will furnish tho power for the drivlntr of i the dynamos at the power plant on mock creek arrived at Haines the first of the week and were hauled out to the power house with teams, where they will be installed as soon as possible. A carload of steel pipes for tho big flume from the head worns to the power house has been shipped from San Francisco and will arrive In a day or two. The large dynamos and two or throe carloads of other machinery for the plant are expected to arrive from tho east in a few days. Tho new plant will be up-to-dnto -n every respect and will be one of the best and most efficient water power plants on tho coast, and power will be transmitted to Baiter City, a dis tance of about 16 miles, a number of manufacturing institutions of that city having arranged to use electric power In their plants. Ho also calls attention to the iact mat tno game laws aro not put up In pamphlet form nor arc they so arranged In the statutes that any. thing short of an admiralty lawyer could understand them, This uncer tainty of the law makes Its violation not only more frequent, but the pun ishment almost an impossibility, for Juries will not convict under the con dltlons. Game Warden Baker has filed his semi-annual report, which, while too long to print, is full of good sugges tions. Ho calls special attention to the expiration of the law protecting Spokane Cigar Trade. There are 30,000 cigars consumed dally n Spokane, which would em ploy 150 men, carnlnc on tho averace of SlOper week, or $140,000 per year, besides tho manufacturers' profits and strippers' and packers' wages, which would add $GO,000 more, bring lug up Ihe aggregate to $"00.in0 yearly, that would bo left In Spokane Thf Kaat In circulation, How Is that for a ! i,M pay roll? And we can easily do It by buying Spokauo made products. At tho present time there aro only 30 cigarmakors worklnc In tho city. and the manufacturers find It difficult (o disposo of their goods, for tho re tail merchants "push" Eastern made cigars becnuse they mako $1 or $2 more on a thousand, but tho consum er has to pay tho same 5 or 10 cents for tho cigar.
