A few years ago a Philadelphia pa per Informed Its readors that Port land, Or., was a good town, but it would never amount to much as a shipping port, says the Oregonlan. Philadelphia at that time was export- lng about threo times as much wheat as was shipped from Portland, and expected to contlnuo to hold her prestige in that direction. Tho last report of tho bureau of statistics shows how great a mistake was mado by the Quaker city publication. mis report gives tho shipments lor tho 12 months ending November 30 and places Philadelphia in elev enth place, with 1,575,114 bushels to her crealt, while Portland is in fourth placo, with 4,951,966 bushels shipped during tho samo period. Pprtland is not only so near the head of the list that she is led by but three other portu, but her loss on account of tho short crop is smaller than that or uny other Paclflc coast port. Last year Portland was in seventh placo, with San Francisco and Puget Sound In third and fourth places re spectively, tms year Puget Sound hats dropped .back to fifth placo and ban Francisco to sixth placo.
