Chicago, Dec. 21. With tho excep
tion of grain, little surplus freight is
in transit or awaiting shipment, yet
Western railroad officials are quite
confident that conditions will remain
satisfactory owing to nn uninterrupt
ed demand for necessities. The equip
ment or an roads is kept busy, ana
the number of empty cars avallablo
Is not greater than is needed. The
volume of merchandise moving Is less
than a year ago, but this is beneficial
us prompt transmission and dollvery
is facilitated, much to tho satisfaction
of shippers and consignees.
Tho only complaint comes from the
Southwest, where tho floods did so
much damage last spring, but tho sit.
nation there Is not nearly so bad as
pictured by some of tho complaints.
Oeneral prosperity in that section
Keeps tho roads busy. Miscellaneous
package freight is heavier than a year
ngn. During Hie last few weeks a
large percentage of It has been made
up of holiday goods of a better and
costlier kind than has been going In
to the West for some years. There
has nlso been a good movement of
other kinds of high class goods.
In West and Northwest.
In the West and Northwest this
condition Is not quite so pronounced,
although It -does not necessarily mean
that the fnrmers and others are not
as nrosperous as those in the South
west, There is a good, healthy de
mand emanating from the first nam
ed bectlons, but mere is a disposition
to hold off temporarily until tho finan
cial situation became clearer. Re
gardless of this fact, traffic men say
they are well satlsfieu with the show
ing their roads are making. Tho de
mand for staples represents actual
necessities, yet It is sufficient to keep
cars pretty well employed.
Most of the equipment now In use
on tne principal lines is of a greatly
larger carrying capacity than a vear
ago, so that the business being han
dled Is at a less expense than at that
time. Nearly all roads are operating
on a basis of smaller expense. The
matter of increased wages is Bald to
be out of the question and further
retrenchment in this direction is
likely.
Prospects for Next Year.
Some officials are enthusiast le
enough to bplleve that the coming
year will show nearly as good and in
mmo respects better net results than
during the current period or the pre
ceding one. They are all getting the
benefits of great improvements, and
In a number of Instances this will not
have to be charged up against net
earnings of the immediate future.
Some officials seem to think that
there is enough grain in the country
to tide over the period of Industrial
depression, and, chould another year
bring forth good crop results, tho
roads will hardly know what a lean
yenr is. The growth of population in
the territory contiguous to the big
transportation companies is constant
ly increasing, and at the moment Is
large enough to preclude the idea that
the roads will not have a" well bal
anced traffic In the future.
"RICHARD CARVEL" COMING.
Romantic and Patriotic Play to Be at
Fraier December 26.
Thcro is evor an admiration in tho
hearts of an American audlouce lor
patriotic heroism as displayed on the
stage, but it has been no easy matter
to find an actor with tho temporamon
tal and physical gifts equal to tho
portrayal of theso attractive charac
teristics. In tho romantic and patriotic play
of "Richard Carvel," made from Win
ston Churchill's widely popular novel,
tho manly young actor, Androw Rob
son, amply portrays the masterful,
dashing heroic charartcy of this hero,
and fills tho eye and mind with a
picture that once seen demands an
other view, and which lingers perma
nently and pleasantly in tho momorv.
