Mariner of Blalock, and Smith Brothers of the same place arc the men behind the steamboat now running on the middle Columbia, the enterprise being a private ven ture, partly experimental, but deemed sufficiently promising by the operat ors to warrant their bringing a ship builder from Portland to put tho boat up. Whllo preparations did not be come known to any extent whllo In progress, a boat was constructed "at Blaloclf. This winter Smith Brothers and Judge Mariner will enlarge and Improve It for still more active ser vice In the spring. At present the boat runs from Wnl lula to Biggs on irregular wheat car rying trips. It secures wheat car goes principally from the Washington side In Klickitat county, carrying them to Biggs and turning them over to tho 0. U. & N. at that point. It is claimed that $1 a ton Is saved on wheat from Blalocl; to Biggs by tho mere difference in freight rate. Cor responding economies are effected from points either way. Walla Wal la Union. Rent Business Booming. The quietness of Chase avenue was disturbed yesterday by a unique In cident that was more amusing to spectators than to the participants. A house for rent had been placed with two real estate agents, one of whom rented to a tenant early in tho morn ing and the other to a second tenant an hour later. The tenants arrived simultaneous ly, perched on drays carrying their household goods. Expostulations and assurances that each had rented tho house were in vain and complications were increased when a delivery wag on arrived with groceries for one renter. The tangle was not straight ened until one of tho real estate agents was called upon to settle the light of tenantship. The matter was satisfactorily ad Justed and the tenant who was mov ing p first got the house. W.illa Wiillt Union. Babyish Boise. TRUST ECONOMIES SETTLING DETAILS FOR COMING WAGE REDUCTION All Departments of the Steel Combine Affected Possible Difficulties in Sight With the Unions Will Result In Closing Down Union Plants and Running Non-Union Mills. Pittsburg, Ia ' Dec. 12. Today's conl'erepco between the officials of tho United States Steel corporation and the heads of tho constituent com panies are lor the purpose of settling the details of the wage reduction which haB been decided. Is necessary In view of the condition of the steel market. From a rellablu source It Is learned that the reduction will affect all de partments and Include managers and all office help as well as tho thous ands of men employed in the mlllH. In those mills employing union men thuro Is. an agreement between tho company and tho Amalgamated Asso ciation prohibiting a change in wages until tho agreement expires, it i oxpected, however, that the Amalga mated Association will make wage concessions satisfactory to' the com pany. Should the association decline to make such concussions It is expected that tho corporation will meet tho difficulty by closing down tho union plants and runrjhjtr the non-union mills, which, at i educed wages, would be less expensive to operate, PREJUDICED AGAINST TRIB.
