several large purchases have been
made at the prices quoted,wlth prob
ably a small reduction for largo
quantities. An advertisement In tho
local columns of several .hundred
tons or alfalfa hay for salo this week
elicited a dozen queries on tho first
day, showing tho briskness of the
market, and the activity in that lino.
Turkeys arc not coming In as fast
as has been expected by tho dealers,
and tho Thanksgiving period Is at
hand. Chickens are also scarcer
than Is usual at this time of the
year, although thero are enough to
supply tho local demand. No other
features of tho market aro worth
mentioning. It has been an uneventful-
week, from tho grocer's stand

Cent of the Cane Sugar In 1903-4
Beet Sugar Output Two Million
Tons Greater Than Cane Crop.
Tho agricultural department. In Its
official crop reports for November,
announces that the Indications tiro
that tho world has entered on a now
era in tho production of cane sugar.
Tho department quotes estimates,
placing the total sugar production of
the world in tho year 1903-4 at 10,
425,o00 tons of 2,210 pounds each In
cluding 4,342,800 tons of canu sugar
and 0,083,000 tons of beet sugnr, and
says as to the beet sugar:
"During tho past Ave years the
world's output or this product haH
Increased from 3,000,000 to more
than 4,000,000 tfons, quantitatively
the greatest increase over made in
any rlvo year period In tho history of
tuls Industry. Moreover, for the first
time In a half century, tho ratio of
increase in the -world's production of
canu sugar has exceeded that of sug
ar made of beets, the percentage of
Increase In the former product for
tho five years being about double that
of the latter.
The four years Irom 1901-1904, in
clusive, wero each lu Its turn record
breaking years for tho production of
sugar. The previous high lecord
crop (3,630,000 tons) was that of
1894-95, the crop made just before
tho outbreak of the revolution In
the most Important producer, Cuba.
"Tho high record crop in tho his
tory of tho world's beet sugar pro
duction was that of 1902-03. Since
that date there has been a decline
In production In Europe, amounting
in all to about 1,000,000 tons, buttbo
present year's estimated output
shows a considerable Increase over
that of five years ago."
