C. J. Bales, a resident of Portland, who owns SOU acri'3 uf wheat land in Sherman county, says the farmers of that region have done well this year in spite of the light yield, as tho price netted made up for the crop short age. Mr. Bales obtained 72 cents a bushel for his wheat, which aver aged 18 bushels to the acio, and he thinks this Is a fair estimate of the tntire yield ot Sherman county for 1903. "Sherman county farmers aro near ly all out of debt," ho said today, "and the mortgages that were so numerous a few years ago bavo nearly all been canceled, The few mortgages that now appear on tho county records are tho result of individual fanners buying their neighbors out to extend the lunds of tho purchaser. "There is no longer any va'-ant land in Sherman county, and even the 'scab' lands of the southern portion have been taken up. Ky 'scab' lauds Is meant the rocky hillsides facing tho north nnd west, where tho con stant winds have blown the soil away. These lands aro well fitted for graz ing purposes, but not for wheat rais ing. "(arming lands cannot be bought now for less than 25 an acre, and ut this rate they will pay good interest on the investment." Mr. Bales has been in that portion ot eastern Oregon for tho past 20 years, and has witnessed the changes from an uninhabited prairie to a land of nell-tillcd farms, dotted with pros perous towns along the line of the Columbia Southern railroad. tils place is near Wasco, some ten miles west of the Columbia river, where the land is level enough to permit of the use of the "combined harvester." Disastrous Wrecks. Carelessness is responsible for many a railway wreck and the same causes aro making humau wrechsof sufferers from Throat and I.ung troubles. Jlut since the advent of Dr, King's New Discovery for .Con sumption, Coughs and Colds, oven the worst cases can be cured, and hopeless resignation Is no longer necessary. Mrs. wis cragg of uor. chcsUr, Mass., is ono ot the many whose iifo was saved by Dr. King's New Discovery.'
