Quotations on Staoles Furnished by Local Merchants and
Revised Daily.
Perhaps never before In Pendleton
have the hothouse vegetables been
In such demand at this tlmo of year
nor In such fine quality. Tho rad
ishes, spinach, lettuce and other sum
mer luxuries now In tho markets are
very good, and have less of tho hot
house appearance than ordinary.
Country butter Is scarce and eggs
aro still around the 35 cent mark,
although tho supply is Increasing
slowly. Dry onions aro a scarce ar
ticle, and a good quality ot turnips
seems difficult to find, most of thoso
on the market being very largo, and
consequently hollow, or pithy. Ap
ples are ruling strong at 75 .cents and
$1 per box, and the quality is good.
Thoro will bo an increase in the
prlco within a week, If the shipments
for winter use do not liven up somewhat.

How to Sell a Crop and
Still Have it.
A great many farmers curry their crop
for h long time after karvist waiting for
anadvance'lu prices. Those who need
money can get a large part of the value
or thetr crop out In money and still hold
the grain for an advance In the following
manner,
.Suppose a farmer has 3,000 bushels of
wheat which he con sell at 65 cents a
bushel; let him sell It and receive i,jjo
lu payment,; then let him buy 5,000 bush
els of May wheat and margin It 5 cents a
bushel. This will require Jijo.oo, He
will then have $3,000 to use as he sees fit
If the price of May wheat goes up five
cents per bushel, he will make Sijotbe
sine as If he had held hU 5,000 bushels or
wheat In his granary.

Walla Walla Farmers Rejoice to See
Dry Weather Broken.
Karmcrs ot the Walla Walla valloy
viewed with no little satisfaction tho
gentle downpour of rain last nlgnt
and today, as It Is the first rain to
occur since the 11th of the month
and the year's deficiency has been
crawling up at tho startling rata of
.05 of an Inch a day, says tho Walla
Walla Statesman. 1
, The weather for the past three
weeks has been ideal in Its balml
ncss, hut farmers who sowed their
wheat early in the month, and thosn
who wished to got at this Important
farm work before freezing weather,
would have liked a few gentle show
ers of today's naturo sandwiched lu.
The total precipitation for the
month has been but 1.27 Inches and
the year's deficiency has amounted
to 2.21 Inches, a conuition which .
not overcome this winter, may re
sult In shortened crops if next year's
deficiency equals tnat ot tho past
season, which was something unusu
al for Southwestern Washington.
Less than 20 per cent of tho acre
age of the Eureka flat. Proscott belt
has been seeded down owing to the j
lack of rainfall, and threo weeks will I
be consumed In getting In next year's
crops even with favorablo weather.
Farmers of the foothill district
have fared much hotter than those
farming tho lighter tands, and with
few exceptions seeding has been fin
tubed in this district.
