THE DOWIE FARCE,
Tho Dowlo campaign to Now York
City has dwindled Into a sacrilegious
farce. The blustering "prophet" hns
proved to be a vulgar bully, not pos
sessing enough, anility to hold nn In
telligent audience together for nn
hour.
His blasphemy has shocked even
the slums of Now York City, and that
Is saying a great deal. Ills umpty
babbling nbout converting the whis
key drinkers and tobacco smokers,
has come to bo a coarse joke a by
word on the Howery. What respect
tho people of Now York had for
Dowle betore they saw him and his
retinue of dupes, they have lost
wliile listening to tho Insane rantlngs
of this founder of "Zlon."
Dowle Is the ward politician in a
religious robe. Ho Is the "heeler,"
armed with nn emotional role, with
which to whip tho weak Into line.
His quotations from scripture, min
gled with his vile epithets, make a
combination of disgusting harangue
which shocks the sensibilities of tho
thinking man and Axes the I nil del
more strongly in his contempt for the
sncretl principles of true religion,
Dowio is nn antl-cnrlstlan, in his
results. He has won a few intelli
gent people who were attracted by
the novelty of bis communistic settle
ment and its fanatical regulations,
but true Christian backing ha has
none. As a business man, ho is a
success, for Dowlo. On account of
the wealth which his diies have
turned into his treasury, he is able
to command n great credit among
Chicago merchants. He has turned
every dollar to account for Dowlo's
personal benefit. Thero Is no luxury
that money will buy that is too good
for Dowlo, while lils fellow Zionists
must practice and live the most rigid
ly abstemious lives of self-denial.
His religion is u.tra-radicalism. It
is emutlnu run wild. It Is n vulgar
mfs-appllcatfou of the most sacred
tenets of tho Christian faith. Its basis
Is the ridiculously false assertion that
Dowle Is n prophet, a fnc-slmllo of
Klljali, and has a divine mission.
Such base blasphemy Is revolting on
the face of It. It Is the best evidence
of the utterly unchristian character of
the man.
As an Industrial organizer ho is
u huge success. As a commander of
the weaker cluss of dupes which his
novel scheme has won, he Is u hrll
Ifant triumph. As a monoy.gottor, ho
is par excellence, for his persuasions
have brought In absolute strangers,
who have willingly yielded up to his
avaricu the lncomo and accumulations
of years without so much as tho
scratch of a pen In security, and In
addition to giving ti.eir fortunes to
him, they have become willing serv
ants to his eccentric and selflsH sys
tem of government.
In Zlon aro some goad things, It is
true. Thoy have seemingly cleanly
and moral habits nnd hcnlthful regu
lations. Industrially, It is goad be
cause everybody works for Dowlo.
Dowlo is the hankor and tho proud
Zionist instead of paying tho scriptu
ral ono-tenth In tithes, pays John Al
exander Dowle ton-tenths nnd Is bis
bondsman, besides.
neliglouy, Dowioism is a sucrl
legions farce. 'If It wore not for his
great Industrial organization and tho
wonderful aggregation of other poo
pie's money, lie would bo provonted
frgm carrying on his nonsensical an-
tics in civilized society Dowlo's
money is responsible for his liberty
today If ho woro poor, lie would bo
In Jnll half the tlmo for blnspliomy,
vulgarity mul general nntl-clvlllzed
practices.
His Now York campaign Is reveal
ing tho form of tho tlovll hidden under
tho clonk of tho "prophet."
Not ono-hnir tho prostitutes In Pen
oleton are confined In tho cribs on
Cottonwood street. Thero Is a worse
class running at Inrgo In the commu
nity, harbored In lodging houses and
touching elbows with decent peoplo In
the resldenco districts. In daylight
those parasites pretend to bo respect
able. You find thorn keeping company
in good circles and walking ns
straight ns their crooked practices
will permit. Hut at night .they are
streot-wnlkors, wlnedrinkors and de
bauches. They aro wnrso thnn the
licensed prostitutes, because they
contaminate unsuspecting young girls
with whom their seemingly decent
character In daylight, brings them In
contact They Infest ovory part of
tho city, pay no license, poso as re
spectablo people and yet are debased
beyond the possibility of redemption
This class of night hawks should be
nabbed and lined wherever found, no
matter who they happen to be or
whose toot tho shoo pinches. Tho
safety of young girls in tuo com
munity demands that parents know
who to trust and who to shun. Tho
East Oregonlan will publish a. list of
the names of tneso strect-walkors. If
the protection of the community de
mands It, so all tho members of the
demi-monde mny he placed in the
cribs, where tney belong, and lined to
help support the city government.
The police force Is helpless and tin
supported In dealing with this class
of people. Respectable men often
come to the police force and point out
such nnd such n woman as being un
lit to keep company In good society,
yet they whisper, "don't mention my
namo In It." Tho police force can
clean out these parasites If It has
tho support of the community in tho
work.
The Canadian commissioner!) to
the Alaskan boundary convention be
came Infurlnted at the prospect of
surrendering to the United States
that portion of the Alaskan coast,
which has lieen In dispute since the
'territory was first sold to this conn
try, nnd wnlked out, without slgnlnp
the treaty with the other members
of the commission. The Rngllsh
members, recognizing the justice of
the American contention, signed the
agreement nnd settled the affair In
a broad and liberal manner. Tho
United States had made no claim for
territory, not purchased from Russia.
She had not Juggled with boundray
lines, nor quibbled over the meaning
ot plain geographical terms, and the
commission has dealt justly nnd lion
estly with this country, oven though
the decision delivers to the United
States some of tho choicest territory
on tho Canadian coast. This govern
mont paid lnrd cash for that terrl
tory, and has been Jockeyed out of
the iiso of It, and spent millions of
dollars in trying to gain rightful pos
session of It for tho past half cen
tury. and tbu peoplo will be well
pleased with the result, although the
Portland canal, a narrow waterway.
not vital in the contention, is not In
eluded in tho award.
ANARCHISM IN HIGH PLACES.
The secretary of the treasury hns
oeen violating the law again by per
mitting banks In certain cases to sub
stitute other than the United States
bonds as security for public deposits
The Aldrich financial bid of tho last
session, which failed of paesage, pro
vided for this substitution of other
bonds and also .for the depositing of
customs revontto In national hanks
equally with internal revenue, nut
the secretary on his own authority
Has enacted ono provision of tho bill,
and by assuming the power to deposit
any Internal revenue which may have
accumulated In tho treasury ho has
made tho other provision of tho bill
unnecessary for all practical purposes.
So fnr ns ho is concerned, thero Is no
necessity that congress shall aver

Now pnpa rather prided himself on

"Well, son, It you've tried It nnd

As papa spoke bo hauled out his pen
