The old building has been consid ered a flro trap for years and was recently moved to 0110 side of the city hall promises to mako room for the new $40,000 hall now being built. At the urgent request of the citi zens the city books were to be ox ported and tho accountants were In the midst of this work nt the time of the fire; The old safo wns too small to hold all the city records and some of the most valuable of the city papers wore loft outside. It Is openly declared by 'many prominent citizens that the fire was started by .somo one Interested In having tho records out of the way. Tho now hall will bo completed in about another mouth nnd the city headquarters will thon bo second to nonu In Eastern Oregon, but tho loss of tho records will throw tho city government Into temporary chaos.
