Contest Is Becoming a Warm One as
the Merchants Have Interested
Themselves In the matter Miss
Blanche Shull Is In the Lead by
Ten Votes Other Candidates May
Drop Out.
The interest In the contest for the
queen of tho carnival Is growing and
the votes are beginning to come in
thick and fast. The merchants of the
city have Interested themselves In
the matter and most of them have
some favorite who either Is now In
the race or will he In a day or so,
when It Is thought that the chances
for a good start will bc at the best.
Many of the people of the city have
candidates for the honor which they
will bring forward as soon as they
think they have arranged for the
right time In which to launch their
boom. In fact, it Is warming up on
all sides and the end or the week will
see the homestretch of a pretty race.
This morning word was received at
the office of the East Oregonlan that
Miss Stella Alexander wished to re
tiro from the race for the queenship.
Mis Alexander wished to thank her
friends who had honored her, but
owing to circumstances known to
herself, she did not care to remain a
candidate.
Mrs. Matlock Withdraws.
Mrs. Wesley Matlock also wishes
her friends to allow her to resign
from the race. Mrs. Matlock had 22."
votes today when the ballots were
counted and her retirement from the
contest is a disappointment to her
triends.
The result or the ballot today is as
follaws:
Miss Blanche Shull 2!Ui
Miss Nellie McMullen 2S0
Miss Edna Thompson 100
Mis Maude Sheridan, who was also
among the candidates yesterday, has
expressed a wish that her name he
not considered owing to the fact that
she leaves Friday for college, and will
not he in the city during the time
of the carnival.
'Miss Thompson Is a new candidate,
her name having been Introduced
since the counting or the ballots yes
terday. Good Stock Exhibit.
The Interest in the stoc kexhlhit
is also growing and some of the men
from the country who are Interested
In stoqk have begun to make In
quiries as to the conditions of enter
ing their stock. .Mr. Ilalley is dally
receiving queries about his depart
ment of the work and it Is now
thought that there will be an exhibi
tion of stock here sue has has never
been seen In the eastern part of the
state. From now on the affair will
boom.
