Contest Is Becoming a Warm One as
the Merchants Have Interested
Themselves In the matter Miss
Blanche Shull Is In the Lead by
Ten Votes Other Candidates May
Drop Out.
The interest In the contest for the
queen of tho carnival Is growing and
the votes are beginning to come in
thick and fast. The merchants of the
city have Interested themselves In
the matter and most of them have
some favorite who either Is now In
the race or will he In a day or so,
when It Is thought that the chances
for a good start will bc at the best.
Many of the people of the city have
candidates for the honor which they
will bring forward as soon as they
think they have arranged for the
right time In which to launch their
boom. In fact, it Is warming up on
all sides and the end or the week will
see the homestretch of a pretty race.
This morning word was received at
the office of the East Oregonlan that
Miss Stella Alexander wished to re
tiro from the race for the queenship.
Mis Alexander wished to thank her
friends who had honored her, but
owing to circumstances known to
herself, she did not care to remain a
candidate.
Mrs. Matlock Withdraws.
Mrs. Wesley Matlock also wishes
her friends to allow her to resign
from the race. Mrs. Matlock had 22."
votes today when the ballots were
counted and her retirement from the
contest is a disappointment to her
triends.

Mis Maude Sheridan, who was also
