of the World, of which he was a mem
ber, will have charge of the burial
serviros. The deceased carried $1,000
insurance in the Woodmen order.

whence they went to gather huckle
berries. They picked 40 gallons.

Threatened With Typhoid.
Itev. G. II. Glbbs came home last

threatened with an attack of typhoid
fever.

were married last night at Pendleton.
They will return to Milton tonight
nud will reside thii-c miles south of

Death of Dr. Hayes.
Dr. J. L. Hayes died ut his home in
this city yesterday afternoon after a
lingering Illness of typhoid fever.
Several weeks ago the doctor was
taken very 111, and all medical aid
was of no avail and ho finally suc
cumbed to tho dreaded disease. Ho
came hero soveral years ago from
Genesee, Idaho, and engaged In tho
dentistry business. Ho leaves u wl'.j

Visitors to tho Oregon stato fair
this fall will witness tho greatest rac
ing over seen in tho state. Salem
business men havo raised n purse of
$2,000 for 2.17 pacers to be raced for
on Snlem day, which has 30 horses
entered. Those horses aro from, tho
best stables In Oregon, Washington,
Idaho, California and Montana, and
It Is expected at least 20 of them will
start, furnishing tho largest field ot
high-class horses ever seen on a track i
on tho Pacific coast. Portland, too. '
has contributed a purso of $2,000 for ,

land day. This race has 27 horses
