MORMON TELLS HOW FA-

A "Vision" Revealed the Spot Where
One of the Richest Quartz Veins In
the West Was Hidden Gentiles

Hotv he was shown In a ilremn

111 Hie l.nwels of tho hil'. ! told by
Icse KnlKht, a resident of Salt I-nke,
now in Portland, says a Portland pa-lH-r.
"I'mle" Jesse Knlglit. ns ho Is fa
miliarly called In Utah. Is ot the
stripe of men who make no show of
Wi.-.Uh, but are plain In their habits
and dress. In 1S90, 13 years iik,
' I'nrle" Jesse had a little ranch near
Wad, Hock. In Heaver county, lltnh.
lleini; of the Mormon faith nnd stronir
in that belief, he placed itrent de
pendence upon "revelations."
One night he hail a "vision." as ho
lermed It, and saw tho side of n
mountain, rugged nnd steep, with a
ledge cropping out on lis surface. The
I lar-c to him was unknown, but In the
dimness of the dream lie saw the town
of Kureka. nnd east of that mining
1 amp he knew his mountain was lo
cated. A Milce In the vision, so In
states, told him to tunnel Into the
mountain side and ho would discover
"treasures unlolil."
So strong was the luiires!.ou left
with him upon awakening that In
started to find the place he saw lu
his dream. He had never done any
mining, and knew nothing about how
it was riono except by observation
He found the spot shown to him In
his dieam. He followed up the lead
he had undertukcti ami with the aid
of a couple of men worked faithfully
for nearly a year. The "Gentiles." or
non-Mormon people, laughed nt him
and called it a humbug. He. for that
leason. called the claim which he had
located "Tho Humbug." This prop
erty became one of the wonders of
ir.lr.iug men lu I'tnh.
After driving the tunnel for a dis
tance of over I'liil teet. ho encountered
a body of silver and lead ore, from
which he took $0,000. He boeurod
giound adjoining his property nnd
successfully mined it until 1S9II. when
he sold the property to. David IJvnns
and others of Salt Lake City for $250,
000. He established tho town of
Knlghtsvllle al tho mine and now Is
enjoying the pleasures of wealth as
he sees them.
"Uncle" Jesse Is a staunch Mormon
and oiu-tenth or his Income Is tellg
loiisly given to tho tithing fund of
that church. He lives al Provo nnd
has a large family.
In Kpeaiilng of mining In Utah, he
suld:
"Yes. I am still Interested In the
lllack Dragon Iron mine, near where I
made my llrst tint!. We ale steadily
shipping ore trom Ihere to the smel
ters. The output Is used for llnxlng.
as It Is a heavy It on ore und carries
practically no other values
"The Grand Central Is a steady
shipper from the Tlntlc district, but
the .Mammoth, that has produced mi
much ore, Is not now shipping. The
Yankee Is shipping In a small way,
as ure the May Day and Uncle Sam.
The Centennial Kureka l sllll the
