chief engineer of the Alaska Central.
Is lalng out a townsltc at Seward,
which Is to be the ocean terminal of
the road. That portion or the railroad
to be completed this year lies between
Seward and Knlk. The line, accord
ing to the route already surveyed,
will extend from Knlk to what Is said
to be the richest portion of Alaska,
both in mineral and agriculture, by
way of Kagle. on the Yukon, passing
close to Fairbanks, the metropolis of
the Tanann
John Dowdle of Chicago, piesldent
and manager of the Tanana Construc
tion company arrived from that city
with his party several days ago. He
Is a railroad man of natluiml reputa
tion, having recently completed a $2,
000.000 terminal clearing at Chicago.
At the present time he has a large
amount of work In progress In New
Orleans. Col. A. V. Swanltz. is chief
consulting engineer of the construc
tion company. He was formerly with
the Illinois Central, and has superin
tended the construction of 2,000 miles
of railroad during his career, it Is
said.
The Alaskan Central railway was
promoted by local business men and
Is being built by Eastern cnpltal.

and the first meeting ot the organisa
tion ever held outside of Groat Britain.

the orgnnlMtion to hold Its next meet
ing In Canada it was predicted that
the event would prove of great com
mercial Importance to the Dominion.

however, was not appreciated until
today, when the gathering was for
mally opened and the visitors official
ly greeted on behalf of the Dominion
