The work of the committee In the
matter of Illumination will attract
much attention. . The most Imposing
feature of the elaborate general de
sign Is the gieat court of honor that
has been constructed at the Inter
section of Market and Kearny streets.
Two immense arches stretch from
comer to corner, Intersecting each
other, and crowned by a dome com
posed of hundreds of electric globes
and American flags. From tho top
of the dome to a central point are
strings of lights and from the bottom
of the central circle Immense lan
terns are suspended. The arches are
covered with plaster and ornamented
with figures. The entire scheme Is in
white, presenting a pretty appearance
In the day time and a blaze of bril
liancy at night.
Who Will Be Commander?
Among the veterans already on Hie
held warm discussion Is heard regard
Ing the contest for commander-in-
chief. The fight Is one of the most
spirited the organization has seen lor
a number of years. The two leading
aspirants for the honor are General
John C. Black, of Illinois, who has
the solid support of the Middle West,
and former Governor Ilulkeley, of
Connecticut. In case of a deadlock
between the supporters of tho two
leaders In the race it is possible that
a dark horSo may win.
The entire week will be given over
to the business of tho encampment
ami tho entertainment of the veterans
and their friends. One of tho most
distinctive features will bo tho big
parado. in tho ranks will bo all the
veterans' association in convention
hero, tho Grand Army ot tho Uepubltc,
tho Associated Veterans ot tho Mex
ican war, Spanish-American war vet
erans. National Association of Civil
ar Musicians, Sons of War Veterans
and Ml kindred anu auxiliary socie
ties of tho grand army.
This parado will take place Tues
day, u will form at Union Square
and march through the principal
streets of the city.
On the following day theio will bo
a procession of veterans alone. In
tho parade will inarch IS departments
of the grand army In the order ot
seniority. General Edward S. Salo
mon, chairman of the parade commit
tee, is assured there will bo between
20.000 and 23.000 veterans in line.
the committee on eulcrtalntnent
today completed tho final details ot
the elaborate program ot amusements.
Tho main events will occur lu the
Mechanics' Pavilion. Tuesday there
will bo a public reception there, and
Governor Pardee, Mayor SelmilU and
General Shafter. department comman
der, will welcome tho veteians to tho
state and city. Friday tho glent
campfire of the veterans wilt bo held,
and a feast of baked beans, hard tacl;
and coffee, with California dainties
nniied. will be served.
During the week tho fourth annual
national encampment and reunion of
the association of Spanish-American
war veterans will be held. This con
vention will have tho special object
of uniting tho various organizations
of veterans of tho lalo war now strug
gling for supremacy.
In the general arrangements tho
various women's auxiliaries have not
been overlooked and special prepa
rations have been made for their en
tertainment. During the week the
Women's Relief Corps, the Ladles of
the G. A. 1!.. tho society of war
nurses and tne other afllllatcd bodies
will hold their reunions. In several
of the organizations spirited contests
have developed for (he various olllccs
and the proceedings promise to be of
an Interesting character. The attend
ance at ali of these conventions prom
ises to be unusually large, notwith
standing the fact that the bulk of the
membership resides east of the
