Harvest Season In Different Coun
triesCost of Producing Wheat
Average Profit Per Acre In all the
Great Wheat Belts of the World.
Ten million men nnil boveral mil
lion women nre In the mlilst of the
Greatest wheat harvest In the history
of the world. It Is estimated that the
wheat crop UiIb year will reach three
liilllon hnshels, by far tho largest over
Batheieil. The work of harvesting
commenced in January down In tho
South American countries nnd ends
In December In Burmah and Wales.
Meanwhile the supply of brendstuif
for tho next year will nave been gath
ered and shipped to the markets.
Wheat is tho oldest cereal of which
there is any record, being spoken of
In the Bible as tho "staff of lite," and
known to have existed 2,700 years H
C. The exact source of wheat, wheth
er In India, Persia or Kgypt Is un
known, but the first wheat crops of
any consequence were found along
the Nile river.
Modern methods of harvesting grain
have Invaded many of the foreign
lands since Mr. Cyrus McCormlck
built the first reaper In 1831, and his
machines, which have been improved
upon from time to time, have been
the real reason for the increase In
wheat production. It would be a
physical impossibility to gather the
wheat crops on some of I ho great
ranches of the West If machinery
wore not lo be had to aid in tho gi
gantic tusk.
Think or len thousand acres or
ripened grain In one field, which must
be cut within four or five days. A
sufficient number of men could not
cuter the Held to do the work by
hand alone. The most crude methods
or harvest are yet to be found in In
dia nnd Kgypt nnd along the Nile,

where wheat was first sown. Tho
United States and Canada boast anil
actually possess tho most modem
methods of gathering the grain.
While harvesting machines compa
nies, such as tho McCormlck, Peer
ing and other gigantic concerns,
send their own agents and helpers
inlo every part of tho world, lo In
struct the natives in the art ot run
ning a modern binder, the prices, on
acount of excessive freight, nre made
so high that most of the fanners can
not afford now machinery very often.
Grain growing- has not received the
"boom" In other lands as It has in
the United States, principally on ac
count of tho cheapened plan of har
vesting here and the high prices
elsewhere. The average cost til' har
vesting, or producing a bushel of
wheat is 54 cents, while the average
price obtained Is 01 cents. Tills in
eludes all countries of tho woild lu
the estimate. The nvornge of profit
on wheat Is about $1.25 per acre the
world around. The profit In the
United States Is trom $3 to ?S per
acre.
The cost of tho harvest in various
portions of the world is shown ns
follows: United Kingdom, Ml cents
per bushel; Iluly, 72 cents; Germany,
70 cents; France. 70 cents; Hungary.
US cents; Australia, CC cents, Spain, i
CO cents; Canada, 50 cents; united
States, 54 cents; India, 53 cents; Ar
gentina, 53 cents; Itussla, 52 cents.
The average yield ot wheat per
acre In vailons countries nnipii lor
their largo crops follows: Denmark,
SI bushels per acto; United Kingdom,
28; New Zealand. 25: Norway, 25;
Germany, 23; Belgium. 23; Holland,
21; France, 10; United Slates, 18;
Houmunla. IS: Hungary, is; Austria,
10; Canada, 15; Argentina, 13; Italy,
12; India, ; Algeria. 7; South Aus
tralia, 7.
The cost of producing wheat and
the average yield in Italy, India,
Australia and several other foreign
countries are about cuual, hence It Is
Impossible Tor the wheat growers to
realizo profit from the wheal, and In
I'uct, the grain is often raised ut a
loss, but then It Is cheaper than Im
porting breadstuff. For the reason
Unit tho cost of nroducing wheat In
the United Kingdom Is so great, that
countty Imports about 200.000,000
bushels of whent annually. Tho
wheat crop raised In that country
supplies the natives with Hour less
than three months In tho year. The
United States is tho greatest wueai-
raising country nnd exported 1 78,000 .
000 bushels of wheat for export be
tween July 1002 and April ot I'J'M.
Most of this grain was siilppeu to
Liverpool, and somo of It to tho
Philippines, China anil Japan.
The wheat Harvest, wmcu com
