Only Three Surviving Members of
the First Annual Convention, Held
In Cincinnati In 1852 Membership

national Typographical Union of
North Amcrlcn, which begnn hero to
day, maiks an epoch In the "art preservative-
of all arts," nnd com
mands the Interests 0t nil who nre
cither directly or Indirectly connect
ed with tho arts and Industries of
printing. The organization la unique
among labor bodies, ns It Is tho only
craftsmen's organization in the world
that has rounded out fin years if ex
istence The natlonnl body wus formed In
Cincinnati In 1852. Of the delegatus
who attended that meeting nnd who
were instrumental in forming the
union, theio are three surviving.
The I. T. U. has at present nearly
500 local unions, the entire member
ship aggregating -IS.OlK).
The convention was opened at !i
o'clock this morning with addresses
of welcome on behalf nf the District
of Columbia and the local printers. '
The Columbia theater was crowded,
Including the galleries, that were
mostly occupied by women who were
here for the convention of tho ladles'

After an Invocation and the ap
pointment of convention olllcers the
president of the union, James M.
Lynch, was Introduced. President
Lynch in his annual address reviewed
the entire international field, saying
the membership had reason for con
gratulation. The new year opened
well and every effort would be made
to avoid conflicts, and at the same
time eonseivo tho Interests of tho lo
cal unions. While strikes would be
avoided where possible, yet If entered
Into, they would b prosecuted wnn
all the vigor that could he exer
cised, and would not bo abandoned
until tho unfair employer was made
to feel tho terrible cost attendant
upon arroganco nnd a refusal to ac-1
cord just conditions. During the,
year just closed, he said, several lin-
portant newspapers and many noon

The report of J. M. Ilramwood, sec- j
