The territory of Oregon Is -la'cd in this geography of 70 years ago lo bo nuu.OOU square miles In extrc and to have a i.opulnlion of SU.nim In dians. "Tills territory extends west from the Hooky mountains to the Paclllc ocean. It is n region but little explored by the whites. The climate is said to be milder than that of the Mime luttltmlc on the Atlantic. The principal rivers are the Columbia and Its branches. The soil on tills river, for a great distance, is fortlle. and abounds In Ilr trees and pines, some of which are represented to be 21111 or ::oo feet in height and 3D feet in elt cumt'eieiue. The river produces vast quantities of snlmon, which consti tute no small part of the sustenance of the Indians on Its banks. F.ighteen miles above the mouth of the Colum bia Is Astoria, an American settle ment of fur traders. Abundance of Game. "Heaver are found In plenty, pro ducing large quantities of valuable fur. The noble and extensive forests of Oregon, abound In the finest ship timber, and are thronged with wild animals. Thousands of buffalo have been seen within the compass of a mile. The wild horses nre numer ous, spirited and elegant. The In dians are fond ot taking and mount ing them. There are many sheep on all the mountains, and large num bers ot horned cattle grazing on the hills toward the south.' Tills Is all thero was to learn 70 years ago about the Oregon territory out of which Oregon, Washington, Idaho and parts of .Montaua and Wy oming linve been carved. It is no ticeable that mildness of the climate was mentioned though as yet that fact Is little understood in the Knst. No reference Is made to any llrltlsh possessions 011 the coast. The Hon shui possessions in America are bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean, cast by .Mackenzie's river and the Itocky mountains, south by Ore gon territory and west by tile u cllle ocean. The population is given at 1,000 whiles and no.ODO Indians. The coast is said to be rugged and mountainous, resembling the coast of Norway. "It Is dlversllied with lofty mountains, covered with perpetual snow, and deep chasms or cavities tilled up with glaciers of ice. .Mount Kilns rises 18,000 feet or more thun three miles in height, and Is consid ered the highest peak In N'onh Amer ica. Tlie native Indians nre said to resemble the Oreenlaudcrs, ami are principally employed in hunting and fishing. Tlie white population, in general, nre Hussluu fur traders, who barter with tlie natives for furs ami give in return tobacco, beads and other similar articles Interesting to Indians. "Owing to tho low Htago of the water In the city well it has been found necessary to pump some or tho supply from tlie channel ot the river.
