It Is estimated that there aro now COO cream separators owned and op erated In tho county. Farmers now haul cream from every portlnn or the county to North Powder and union, where the creameries aro lo cated. Besides the great amount hauled In, hundreds of gallons are shipped by rail from distant points. Several farmers haul their output as far at IS miles, making tho trip twice a week. The separator lias been made tho greatest producer of profits of any small Invention of the farm. Tho fnrnmr cnnirntn. 1.1.3 ,nv- , and cream at home, the small bulk oi me pure cream making the task of delivery simple and convenient. One can of 20 gallons' capacity will hold the cream from three days' milk ing on 12 cows, and the sklramei mill; can bo used each day to feed nigs, calves and chickens. Almost every farmer in the coun ty is now furnishing cream to one of the creameries and men who hereto torc would not handle any enterprise lss than a ICO-acre farm, aro milk ing from four to six cows at a hand some weekly profit. The output of the creameries finds ready market In the mines of Baker county and much of It Is shipped to Portland, and more would be shipped there if cheaper rates could be se cured. In the winter season the creamer ies have been compelled to run hau time on account of the scarcity of winter milch cows and Impassable roads, but It is tho intention of tho dairy and creamery people to estab lish winter routes and prepare enough good cows to keep the creameries running all winter. More attention is being paid to the growing of dairy forage feeas, and the business promises to take i.ie lead in Union county within a very few years. One man who bad exceptionally good cows claims to have netted $90 per month on 12 head, during tho months of April. May and June, while the bunchgrass was good. With the decreasing range area, upon which large herds of cattle were formerly ranged, the farmer finds it necessary to turn his attention to other profitable branches that can be handled on a smaller area. The busi ness is stimulating the building of pood country roads, the growing of better breeds of milkers and the pro duction of diversified crops to pro duce milk. JULY WAS DRY.
