Mr, .Mohler is opposing fate, when he opposes the construction of the portage road by refusing to sell a right of way. The country will settle up and demand moro transportation facilities, lu spite ot ntiy opposition and the sooner all who opposo tho road come to see this Inevitable out come of civilization, the bettor it will be for the stale. 'Neath brazen skies, with Inter spersing showers The hot earth prostrate lies as in a swoon; There Is a hectic brightness of the moon Which Hoods the land as If with magle dowers To weave weird phantasies and spectral llowers; Uke desert-blast comes sultry breath of noon: The latent natural forces are eftsoon To waken to fresh life with Autumn's powers. Dexter Smith. CHEAPER RATES ARE NEEDED. j Invited lo locate. Portland should export 50.000,000 bushels of wheat Instead of 15.000,000 bushels, nnd If tho rate from Hunting tun to Portland were reduced to cor respond with the rate west of The Dalles, it would do more to stimulate Immigration and settle the Idle coun try than any other agency that could be called into action. The statement of President Mohler. of the O. 11. & N., to the effect that there is no need of cheapet trans portation rates in Oregon, will e-uise many people interested to hunt up .some figures on the subject of trans portation In the territory affected by lh portage road. The Inland Kmplre. the teriltory which will be vitally affected oy con struction of this road, produces an nually 40,000.000 bushels of grain, 10,000.000 pounds of wool, S0.000 head of cattle. 320,000 head of sheep and hogs for market, 3.600 carload.' of fruit, 2,105,000 pounds of hides and peltb, and 307,000 tons of hay. The natural and inevitable market for this volume of pioduce Is Port land and the Puget Sound cities. Fully two-thirds of this Immense out put goes to Portland, over the lines of tho O. It. & N. Whatever is pro duced in excess of the needs of this great territory must be shipped out of the Interior over this road, owing to the condition of the Columbia river and the absence of other rail lines. It Is natural for the O. It. &. N. to oppose any Invasion of Its carrying trade, and It Is Just as natural for the prodmer to seek to reach the market by a cheaper route. The statement of the head of tho O. It. & X. Company, to the effect that there is no need of cheaper rates from the Inland Kmplre, causes thinking peo ple to wonder why rates are so niucn cheaper on territory covered oy river competition than that not so affected. It Is only necessary to quote rates from Arlington to The Dalles, where there is no river competition and from The Dalles to Portland, where i there is river competition, to con-1 vlnce the cantlld-mlnded man that ( there Is a need of cheaper rates Irom Kastom Oregon to Portland that) those now In effect. Tho present rate on wheat over the O. It. & N. from Arlington to The Dalles, a distance of 51 miles, is 11". cents per 100, on wool, $1.00 per 100, and on cattle, hogs and sheep, $24 per carload. Tho rate over the O. It. & N. from The Dalles to Portland, a distance of S8 miles, where there Is river compe tition. Is T cents por 100 on wheat, 25 cents per 100 on wool, nnd $38 per car on cattle, hogs and sheep, The four classified rates from Arlington lo Tho Dalles ure first-class, 53 cdnts; second-class. IS'fc cents; third-class, The resignation of Ahlo S. Watt, as tax and real estate agent of the O. K. & X., removes one of the most trusted and able otllelals trom the service of the company. .Air. Watt has been a familiar ligure in the West for the past quarter of a 'on tury, and perhaps no other man in the state enjoys a wider circle of friends nor a business record of more pleas ant relations. He lias dealt with res idents of Eastern Oregon for the ! past 20 years, and lu all that time he has been the same just, consider- i ate, genial gentleman, and will be! missed in this section by all who I have had occasion to meet him s,o-! dally, or lu the transaction of the "THE FOOL AND THE MAN." A fool and a man of wealth, they say. Once met In ti garden fair. And the fool he laughed in his fool ish way. Hut the man looked worn with care Quoth the mail, "Oh. fottl why laugh- est so? This world lo me is dead. You have found n purse or drunk. I trow. 'Till the wine affects the head." "Oil, no," the fool then made reply, "No puive I've found today, Nor drunk of cheering wine have I. The reason I am gay Is this: I've earned my keoit no in ore Since venter's sun declined. And I've besides no wealth lu stuie. Hut I have peace of mind." Tnen the fool passed on with smile anil nod. Through the garden fair and cool Quoth the wearv man of wealth. "Oh. I were but a fool."
