Williams, general organizer of the Woodmen of tho World lodgo for Idaho, was in the city yesterday. Jlr. Williams has just completed a tour of the northern counties of the state in connection with his work and Is now en route to his home at Boise. Ho reports that the lodge in the state Is enjoying a splendid growth. A special campaign in tho Interest of the order in the northern counties will bo Inaugurated November 1 and at that time Mr. Williams will re turn to this field to assist in the campaign. There nre now 40 lodges of the order In tho state and tho membership Is about 3,000, NEW PRESIDING ELDER. Special Services Tomorrow at the M. E. Church, South. llev. H. S. Shangle, the now pre siding older of the Spokane district, M. E. church. South, will bo in Pen dleton tomorrow, and will remain over Sunday, and will hold the fourth quarterly conference for the Webb street church In this city. He will preach both morning and evening, and those who fall to hear him will miss a treat, for Ttev. Shangle is a speaker of no ordinary power. Tho did) meets the second nnd fourth Fridays of each month, and the purpose of tho club is partly to promote a hotter understanding among tho clerks of tho city, nnd to acquaint them socially. SOCIABLE EQUINE. Horse Goes Calling Without Being Invited Is Not Asked to Call Again. Pendleton has a horse that Is not only fashionable by Instinct, but so ciable by practice, as has been evi denced by his actions of last cveu !ng. About half past nine o'clock last night tho Misses Sawtelle were much alarmed by unaccountable noises in the front part of their house. They were alone In the house at tno time and were, therefore, doubly frighten ed, for tho noises showed that some one was attempting to enter the front door. Whatever It was tho thing came on into the open door and through tho hall into tho parlor, where It wan dered around in an aimless sort of way and at last tho ladles both to gether took courage and went to in vestigate. When they reached tho room an old horse was standing 'a the middle of tho floor, very compla cently admiring the pictures nnd var ious articles of bric-a-brac placed hero and there over Hie room. The place was evidently much to his lik ing, for he declined to bo escorted out doors and made quite a lengthy visit before ho could bo Induced to leave for his home. Ho was not asked to call again. Carpenters wore put to work on the remodeling of the depot this morning nnd already tho place Is taking on a forlorn aspect, as the windows and doors aro being torn out and the In terior Is overhauled. The work was started In tho men's waiting room, and from there will progress toward.4 tho other end of tho building. It will not bo mnny weoks beforo tho city will havo a new and commodious station. Ilontloy, agent for tho Na tional Fire Insurance Company of Hartford, Conn., Is In receipt of n letter from George I). Dornln, Pacific coast manager of tho company, in which ho snys the losses of the flro Insurance companies on tho coast this year amount to 100 per cent loss ratio. It has been tho most disas trous period experienced by the com panies for at least ten yeurs. Glen Wells Has Returned Home, Mrs. J. M. Bontloy accompanied her nophow, Glen Wells, to his homo at Hoppner this morning. Mr. Wells Is the young man who was saved from tho flood at Hoppner out of a family of eight, and ho was Injured by ills experience to such an extent that ho has not yet recovered lrom ills hurts.
