Tliu fore part of the week was
warm ami showery, while the latter
part was clear ami cool, especially
at iiIrIU. The showers wero not
heavy enough to he of benefit to corn
and pastntes. anil In some of the
roast counties they Interfered with
haying;. The hay harvest Is now -well
advanced, and In the southern sec
tions many farmers have finished
cutting their second crop of alfalfa.
The hay crop, as a whole, will be
less thau last year, and It will fall
slightly below the average for the
last 10 years. Pasture on tho ranges
is drying up. but it continues good In
the mountains.
part of Hie week caused lice to tip
ctease In the hop yards, and somo
spraying has been done. Hops con
tinue thrifty and no serious damage
from vcrtiln has yet occurred. The
crop is not so far advanced as usual
at this season of the year, and some
fears are entertained that It will not
.mature before the fall rains begin.
Potatoes and gurdens are doing
finely, but the nights have been loo
coo for corn to make rapid growth,
and this crop now needs rain. Kleld
onions are reported to be generally
In good condition, although In n fow
places they are affected by blight.
A short crop of peaches Is being
marketed, and plums are beginning
to ripen. Prunes and pears continue
to make excellent progress, and these
crops promise well. Apples are un
even, and an average crop Is not ex
pected. During the past week nigu i
winds in tho Grande ltonde valley
have caused considerable green liiilt
to drop.
