New Bishop's Biography.
IU. ltev. Charles H. Colton, the now
blshoii or Buffalo, was born In New
Vmi. oitv In ids lln ras trrnduat-
ed from St. Xavlor's college In tho
class of 187S, and was ordained a.
priest at St. Joseph's Seminary In
Troy In 18'fi. His first pastorate was
at St. Stephen's, New York city, as
assistant to the late Dr. McGlynn.
Father Colton remained at St. Ste
phen's until ISMi, when he was sent
to Port Chester, but tho year follow
ing, when Dr. McGlynn's diltlcultiea
tlnew St. Stephen's parish Into a
turmoil and resulted In his excommu
nication, Fathor Colton waB recalled
and was entrusted with the difficult
tJ.sk of building up a harmonious
spirit In the parisn anu at. mu uiu
time wiping out a threatening debt.
Too result of a few years-' work was
tl.at St. Stephen's parish was reunit
ed, the debt was cleared from the
church, and St. Stephen's scnooi was
established as one of the strongest
oi Us kind In New York. By this
service Father Colton won the highest
esteem in ecclesiastical circles ami iu
