LOYALISTS OF IRISH
CAPITAL SPREAD IT ON,
Medieval Ceremonies Characterise
the Reception of the King and
Queen Mites of Gorgeous Trap,
pings Decorations and Music Are
of the Times of Heraldry.
Dublin, July 21. The arrival of
their majesties at Kingstown today,
and their subsequent state entry Into
Dublin was made the occasion for
brilliant ceremony. Particularly inter
esting was the ceremony at the city
limits, where an ancient "gate and cas
tle towers had been reproduced. On
the city side of the gate were the
lord mayor and council in their scar
let robes, the mace hearers in blue
and siUcr and seeral hundreds of
representative cltirens of Dublin, who
were provided with seats on stands.
Several crack regiments lined the
road as a guard of honor, while be
hind them were cordons of police and
militia.
Thousands of spectators eagerly
awaited the coming of the king nnd
queen. Always personally populnr
with the Irish King Kdwnrd was to
receive a warm welcome on the oc
casion of this, his first visit to the
Kmerald lslo sinco ho ascended the
throne. Shortly before the arrival of
the royal party the pursulvnnt-at-arms.
wearing u gorgeous capo of
royal heraldry, galloped up to the
lord mayor and asked permission for
the entrance of tho king and queen.
Gravely and In quaintly-worded terms
of courtesy ihe lord mayor granted
the request. Hack galloped tho pur-suivant-at-arms,
tho gate banging be
hind him, tho whole scone being n
counterpart of a sixteenth century
play
Then Irom the rampart of tho gate
came a fanfare or trumpets. Tho
royal party was In sight. Out upon a
scarlet clolb stepped Lord Mayor
Hnrrlnglon and the memhors of tho
municipal corporation, the same who
had refused lo vote the king an ad
dress of welcome. Their robes glow
ed In the sunshine nnd their wands
and maces flashed brilliantly. Tho
gate was swung open nnd In rode the
advance guard of the royal cortege.
A squad of life guards preceded the
royal carriage and tnelr brilliant uni
forms evoked loud applause from tho
spectators. The first carriages con
tained tho home secretary and other
members of the king's party, accom
panied by members of the court nnd
attended by mounted eqtierites. Kl
nally. amid almost perfect silence,
save for the echo of cheers and cries
of "God save the king," irom oulsldo
the city limits came the royal couple.
During tho five minutes when (ho
king was occupied with tho cere
monies at the gate there was scarce
ly a lull In the loud cheering r" the
crowds. Frequently his mujesty nod
ded. In fact, he scarcely ceased nod
ding during the entire nine-mile drive
through tho streets of Dublin to tho
castle.
