Hooker & Co., Buffalo, N. Y. CREEK VERSUS JAP RAILROAD COMPANIES ARE CHANGING LABORERS. Japs Not a Success as Worklngmen Importation From Southern Eur ope Not Much Better-Both Are Contract Laborers. Tlit' railroad corporations of the West are tiring of the Jnp, ns a track laborer and are jumping out of the "frying pan Into the flro" by hiring a mongrel horde of Greeks, which pos. sesses all the faults and none of tho virtue of the Japs. The Jnp becomes so Independent, after a couple of years in the United Slates that It Is Impossible to depend upon him with any certainty. He qunrrols with tho white boss, works only when he feels inclined, nnd be comes dl&slpated. The fact of the matter is, 10 Japs will not do the work of five good while men on a track, and they never do the work ns Intelligently. Tliey ry quick to learn, saving of tliolr money, and very du tiable for Him first year, but become hend-slrung and itnbcatablo with longer acquaintance. They are con stantly changing their location, re moving from gang to gang and are an eiidlcbtt source of trouble to the track department. As a relief from this condition, tho companies aro now bringing Into tho country, as fast as they can induce them to shako off their attachments that bind them to the slums nnd cess pools of Km ope, a horde of fircek, ami mongrel laborers. This addition to the population of tho country is no bettor than the Jnp, ub they are foieign to every American Idea and instinct, ami not so cleanly, person ally, as the Jnp. They aro moto slow to pick up Amerlcun ways, slower to learn the work required of them and more dissipated after 11 short res idence than the Jnp. Most of these people calling themselves (j rooks are mongrels from Sicily and Sardinia, Macedonians with an Italian tlngo. icnegade Utilgarians nnd Tyrolebe la borers ami a general collection of pro nilscuous nativity, which would stag ger Hie bureau of ethnology to figure out As many of theso so-called (Jreeks speak Italian as OiimjIi. Not one In 40 of them know a tlreek letter when they see 11 and not many of tin m write letters homo In uny Ian guugi while tho Jap is a giealer k'ter-wrlter than the American wotk Ingman bout 1110 only udvautugo lo thu country in general of the Oreek la borer over the Jap, Is that the .reek buys und eats moie American pro ducts than tho Jap. The basis of the food of tho Japs Is tho Soy or bean juice, which they ship here in casks and which enters into every meal with more or less regularity The basis of tho meal of too Greek Is bread, und tho oven Is the first pos session of the gang of Greeks. Tho Greeks alt) not us cleanly us Hie Japs. They do not acquire one-half the civility to strangers us the Jup and ale more clannish and Insolent. Their general apearuueu Is little bet ter than that of tho Asiutlc, and their intellectual gifts ate not ho great. Tho main point of resemblance be tween tho two classes, however, Is tho fact that both aro contract labor ers under a system of padronism, which destroys their value as citi zens. They are nothing more nor lebrt than slaves under tho Greek or Jaii contractor, until they learn enough of American piactices to throw oIT their bonduge and look for a Job on their own account TRANSPORTATION LINES. 1 HOTELS.
