Is progressing well. .Many carloads of the structural steel have arrived and more is on the way. The building is the largest struc ture ever built by governmental au thority for any exposition. It is SOOx To" leet and $130,000 was set aside lor its construction. Tho govern ment building occupies a commanding site on'a hill In the extreme eastern part of the World's Fair grounds. Southeast of it lies the high pla teau on which will be situated the group of state buildings. Tho build ing fronts northwest, and commands a splendid view of the main exposi tion boulevard, which is a mile long and 3(H) feet wide. The grounds sur rounding tlie building are generously tteated by the landscape gardener. On the teirace in front of the govern ment building a great flower garden Is laid out on either side of the flight of steps 100 feet, wide from side to side leading to the main entrance. These gardens are on a slope so that the entile beds may be seen lrom the street level in trout of the building. A platform 4DxlJ3 occupies a space in the center of tho flight of steps, and the entire flight Is to be richly adorned with statues. Other means or reaching the level of the govern ment building will be a series of zig zag roads, with gentle Incline. 30 leet wide. Of Classic Style. The general style of the building is pseudo classic. The central pavil ion with the colonnade on either side, tonus a portico 15 feot wide and 521 leet long, CO feet above the general In el of the other buildings, from which a splendid view is permitted ih- visitor. An attic 15 feet high, surmounts the i-olonnado sof Ionic column and this is richly embellished with statues. The dome surmounting tho central pavilion Is loo feet in diame ter and In a general way is designed alter the J'antheon at Home. The top oi the quadriga which surmounts It, is 175 feet above the giound. The sculpture displayed Is symbolic of ill. republic and the arts of peace. THE OREGON TIE TRUST. Walla Walla Will Erect Splendid Me morial to Soldiers of Spanish War. Walla Walla, July lu. At yester day afternoon's meeting of the Hed Cross Society the contract for erect ing the Spanish-American war veter ans' monument was awarded to the Itoberts Monument Company for $1, 10U. In placing such a low bid Man ager Leo Itoberts tills morning stat ed tho price represents tho actual cost of the monument, tho company expecting no profit either In tho la bor performed or on the material. The monument will be constructed entirely of Bedford stone, of which the finest monuments lu the world are constructed, and will be 1M feet eight Inches in height and seven and one-half feet wide at the base. There will be three bases surmounted by the figure of a soldier standing at rest. The figure will be seven feet high. KISHINEFF MEMORIAL DAY. Services Will Be Held in All Chicago Synagogues Tomorrow. Chicago, III., July 11. Tho Jews of Chicago have arranged to ohscrvo to morrow as a memorial day for the massacred Jews of KlhhlnetT. We Jews did all we could to collect money for tho sulferers, but now Is the time to do something on tho side of morality to remind our peoplo that such occurrences are not spontaneous.
