Mr. William Kllgore has just about
completed his new residence and in

in the near future.
Homer Watts has arrived from Eit
Reno, where he recently graduated
trom the state university.
Mr. Arthur I.ang, of Havana Sta
t on, made a business trip to Athena
this week. He reports after the rain
and cool, cloudy weather, the crops
are looking fine. He thinks his crop
will make an average of 35 bushels
for acre.
William Weuallen, who was danger
ously ill last week, Is much bettor
and It is hoped to lie tip and around
soon.
Mrs. Hrandon, mother of Mrs. O.
O. Chamberlain of this city, was call
ed to Hoppner Tuesday to meet her
son, Clarence Andrews, who lost his
wife and three children in the flood.
The last body to be found was that of
Mrs. Andrews, which was found in a
pool of water two miles below that
city Tuesday. The bodies of her
three children were found early in
the search.
H. C. Manela, who has held the po
sltlon of bookkeeper for the Pacific
Coast Elevator Co., for the past two
years in Atliena, has been transferred
to Wnlla Walla. Charles Kennedy of
I'endleton, will probably bo the suc
cessor of Mr. Manela.
John M. O'Harra, of Pea Ridge, has
recently purchased three thorough
bred Poland-China hogs from A. U
Swaggart's famous herd. This pur
chase will be a valuable acquisition
to Mr. O'Harra'B fine stock.
Miss Elsa Rosenzwelg returned
home last week, after spending a few
days with friends at Touchet. She
closed her school last Friday in Frank
lin, where she has been teaching for
the past two months.
Mr. and Mrs. William Tbompkins
left last Thursday for a visit with
friends at Waitsburg.
Miss Ethel (larfield left last Sun
day for a visit with I-a Grande
friends.
Mrs. Newt Hales fell ir feet from a
cherry tree In Walla Walla, and is
reported to be dangerously hurt.
Graver Hnys has gone to Pasco,
where lie has employment In a round
house. .Mrs. David Taylor Is rapidly im
proving. She Is able to be up most
of the time.
Mrs. Waterman has gone to Spo
kane to visit her son.
Mr. 11. F. Ogle, of Athena, left the
c!tv en route for his stock ranch at
Willow Springs. He will stop over
night at Pendleton. Mr. Ogle Intends
to mow his crop of rye and look aftei
his slock a few days befoie returning
home.
Hays-Berlin.
Mr Frank nerlln and Miss Theresa
Hays were united In marriage at the
home of her father Wednesday after
noon. The bride is the oldest daugh
ter of J. M. Hays, of this city, and Is
n well known and highly esteemed
young lady. The groom Is one of
Athena's prosperous farmers. They
weie united in marriage by Rev. C. A.
Sias pastor of the Christian church

young couple.

Arthur Shlck and Jessie Harden
were united In marriage In Pendleton
last Wednesday, both of tills city
They aie all well known here where
they have grown from childhood. Tuc
groom Is one of Athena's young busi
ness men, being a member oi tne Arm
of Shlck & Co. The bride is the
daughter of Mr. anil Mrs. Harden of
the Athena hotel and is one of the
most popular young ladles of the city.
Sixteen Persons Baptized.
Sixteen persons were baptized by
Rev.' W E. Armfleld. of the M. E.
church in the Umatilla river last
week. Eight from Adams were Im
mersed last Tuesday and eight from
here received the baptismal rites lb.
following day.
Very Sudden Death.

CIRCUS IN TOWN TODAY.
Norris and Rowe Show to a Large
Crowd This Afternoon.
The much read about, talked about
and advertised Norris & Rowe's big
shows arrived by special train tills
morning. There was quite a largo
crowd of men, women and children
on hand at an early hour to seo tho
hundreds of animals unloaded from
the train.
A still greater crowd gathered at
the show grounds to watch the erec
tion of tho big tents and when tho
stiect parado appeared the entire
populace seemed to be on the streets.
There were countless nnlmals of va
rious sizes and kinds from elephants,
to monkeys. Tliero wero scores of
Shetland ponies In the procession,
most of them drawing chariots, cages
and other vehicles.
An Immense crowd filled the tents
this afternoon, and tho unanimous
opinion was that it was one of tho
brightest and best tented shows that
has ever visited this city. The best
thing that may bo said of it is that
it wears well, for it seems to do a big
ger business each time it comes to
town.
