His conservatism has been extreme and ho has been usually satisfied with small profits. The fnmlly trait of cautiousness has domi nated all his schemes, and ne has novor been a plunger in any sense, but has always worked on a well-defined systom and usually identified as a boar. Chicago, Juno '25. The next labor movement of national importance be gan this morning,- in a strike ngalnsi the inland Steel Company of Indiana Harbor. The machinists demand an eight I hour day without a reduction of wages hitherto paid lor nine hours. For three years the machinists have been fighting for nine hours instead of 10. In convention in May at Milwaulteo they decided to fight for eight hours. The inland Company contract which called for nlno hours, wns tho first to expire. Other contracts expire dally from now until 1904. In each Instanco tho same demands will be made be fore renewal contracts are signed. Labor Troubles In Portugal. Oporto, Portugal, Juno 25. T.io strike situation is so serious here that it now appears as though tho dissatisfied laborers are liable to got control of the city. They have be come greatly excited over tho troubles I of their compeers In Spain and are j becoming more and more assertive ' every day. Nearly all extensive indus tries are at a standstill. The government has ordered a large force of cavalry and two war ships sent to this point to suppress outbreaks of any alarming propor tions. Telephone Strike at Spokane, Spokane, June 25. Mrs. Vnn Orsdnll went to look after the needs of members of tho Women of Woodcraft, and to make arrange ments for the distribution of tho clothing and bedding and money col lected by Pendleton Circle, No. 527. Of the Gr.snd Circle appropriation Mrs. Van Orsdall disbursed $400, hnlf diiect to needy members, and half to the general relief committee.
