William C. Cusick Finds Rare Flower
In Blue Mountains Only One True
Specimen Discovered in America
Before.
William C. Cusick, a veteran bot
anist or Union, Oregon, passed
through Pendleton yesterday evening
from Walla Walla, where ho made a
scientific discovery last week, which
Is of almost world-wide significance
Irom a botanical standpoint.
A short story is necessary to intro
duce the subject intelligently.
In the report or his botanical dis
coveries in America, Douglas, the
Scotch botanist, who spent two years
on the Pacific coast with the Hudson
Bay Company in 1S20-21, reports hav
ing found a very rare specimen of
flower In the mountain region near
the Walla Walla camp of the Hudson
Bay Company.
This flower was so much sought
niter in Kurope. that specimens ior
domestication could not be found to
supply one-half the demand for it.
It is a most beautiful yellow flower
with sort, velvety, golden petals,
which grow deeier and richer with
cultivation. It is more beautiful than
the tulip and is easily transplanted,
being a hardy plant of the north
temperate zone.
Douglas found but one specimen In
America and that was near old Walla
Walla. Other botanists have since
searched the continent in vain for
the plant, but so far but one man
succeeded In finding one very poor,
weakly specimen, which died soon
after it was transplanted. This for
tunate scientist was Dr. Nevlus. who
made many botanical discoveries In
the United States.
Mr. Cusick had studied Douglas'
journal of discovery and looked with
much interest to the Walla Walla
region. His niece. Miss Elma Cusick.
of Union, has been a student of Whit
man for the past two years and each
year her uncle has cautioned her to
watch closely for specimens of the
"lellow Lupine.' In the flower gar
dens and greenhouses of Walla
Walla.
On a picnic excursion with Whit
man students. Miss Cusick found
what she supposed to be the rare
plant and Immediately Informed her
uncle who hastened to Walla Walla
and lost no time In going to the scene
of the picnic, on a small stream In the
foot of the Blue mountains, where,
after diligent search, he found num
erous specimens of the flower In all
stages of growth.
He had been hunting for this Tlch
find for 25 years and Its rediscovery
marks a little botanical epoch.
The American name of the flower
Is the Golden Yellow Lupine, and the
Latin namp. Lupinus Sablnil,
Mr. Cuslclc feels very proud of his
discover' and will make every effort
to secure seed this fall. The lending
greenhouses and florists of the Unit
ed States have advertised in vain for
specimens of it to send to European
customers, and if Mr, Cusick succeeds
securing the ripened seed, he will
have accomplished no little task In
the interest of science.

Cavanna vs. the Oregon Sugar Com
pany, whu-li occupied thret; days In
the circuit court, has been decided
in favor or the company. It was
claimed that the defendant company
placed lefuse matter on the ground
at the sugar factory, the seepage
from which contaminated the wells
on the iilalutllTH farm, three-eights
of a mile away, and damages in the
sum of $S00 were asked; but the
jury did not think the factory was
the cause of the joor water an plaint
iff's wells.
