Pilot Rock as well as Ridge needs rain very badly at present, IN THE BAHAMA ISLANDS. Government Commission Will Scien tifically Explore Them. Baltimore, Md June G, A scienti fic expedition to the Rahama Islands will leave Baltimore tomorrow on tho steamer H, W. Vonnamo. Tho expe dition will bo under the direction of Dr. George 11. Shattuck, assoclato professor of geology of the Johns Hopkins University. Its object will be scientific research in all its branches, Including geology, physical geography, botany and zoology. The government has appointed ex pert workers from the soli nnd tlsh commission to accompnny the expe dition; the history of the Islands will be studied, with their commercial ge ography and banking system. A spec ial study will also be made ot atmos pheric conditions and the sea atmos phere. A new beach mark will also bo fixed to show the recession of the tide. The expedition is one of the most thoroughly equipped that has ever been sent out, since all branches of science are represented, and the vnlue of Its work will be the groator In that very little literature exists regarding this portion of the world's surface, nor has It been written up scientific ally to any great extent.
