No. 5, the west-bound local pnssen Kcr train which left Pendleton Wed nesday morning on time, was doom ed to experience a greater novelty than that ot being once more on time, before reaching Portland. The train left Pendleton In charge of Conductor Matter, and In taking tip his tickets ho noticed nothing tin itisual among the passengers and was congratulating himself" on the smooth running trip that had fallen to his lot. But whllf counting his tickets and checking them up, near Troutdale, the train speeding along 40 miles an hour, within 30 minutes of Portland, an elderly gentleman who proved to j be a doctor, Informed hltn that a woman, Mrs. Sears, ot Sumpter, in the chair car. was in a delicate situ ation and would undoubtedly add an ether passenger to his list before reaching Portland. The conductor was at first horror struck. It was too near tho end of the run to allow such an annoying thing to happen. Uesldo this. No. E was on time onco, and lie would not stop and lose five minutes arguing the case with the woman, for a month's salary, At first ho swore vengeance on Conductor Nash, who turned tho wo man over to him In this condition, at tho end of his run at Pendleton. Then he softened again nnd thought Mr. Nash was not to blame. His first thought was to ask Jim Randall, the engineer, what to do, as he always did on all previous perplexing occa sions. nut he happened to think that Jim was always out on the road when such things happened at home and his wife attended to them, so Jim would not know. He then determined to put on a bold front and ask the woman to wait till she got to Portland; she had waited this long, she could cer tainly put It off 25 minutes longer. While he was frantically wonder ing what to do, things were happen ing over in tho chair car, nnd by the time he had resolved to wake the best of It, a 10-pound bouncing boy had been added to his passenger list nnd his bosom swelled with pride to think of tho good luck of the young ster, who might have been born In the North Powder desert, had it not been for the ract fiat his train wns on time. His feeling of enmity toward tho little woman who had caused the trouble was swept away. He admir ed her for her judgment, as she had evidently Intended to reach Portland before the momentous event happen ed, and had only missed her guess by 20 minutes, a feat which even an O. H. & N. conductor could not ac complish, The mother and child were made as comfortable as possible and the embarrassing occurren'-e had been handled so gtacefully that all the passengers present assuied the con ductor that If they should be called upon to go through a like experience thev would not iiosttate to raiium their case to an O. R, & N. passenger conductor. THE CITY LIVERY HOARD AND SALE Stub e. M. J. earner, nronr ctor. for fine turnouts Stock boarded nt reaaonible rates. Stable 118 Alta street. COMMERCIAL STAPLES, G. -M. Hood niver. May 29. For years, the Warm Spring squaws have been the chief pickers t,n the world-famous Hood River strawberry crops, but this year Indians will not be allowed In the Melds. All winter tho Warm Spring Indi ans have had tho smallpox among them, and while tho virulent form has practically disappeared, the dlseaso still exists among them In n light form, and many of tho squaws work without cessation, whllo sporting a full blossomed ense of smallpox, In this mild form, The frultmen recognize this stntc of affairs and will bar out all Indi an pickers and if necessary quaran tine against tno tribe. This will bo a severe blow to tho Indians, as their chief source of revenue Is the work afforded by the Hood niver berry patches, nnd when they are shut out there, certain want stares them In the face.
