Schmidt's The Reliable Druggist ftotoffirr Block I'hone Main fcj! REV. JONATHAN EDWARDS ON SUNDAY DESECRATION. Able Address Before the Congrega tional Convention at Seattle Views of a Thoughtful, Scholarly Man, on This Important Subject. The Seattle Sunday Times of May 17; contained the following able nil dress by Hev. Jonathan Kd wards of this city, delivered beforo the Congre gational convention In that city, on the ' Sunday Question on the Pacific Coast : "God bestowed four gifts of su nremo value upon mankind through the Hebrews. They were the Holy Scriptures, the monotheistic conccp tion of God, the blessed Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the Sabbath, or Sunday, or the Lord's day, which I think the most scriptural and signifi cant name, under the new economy; it is also the legal title of the first uuy 01 inc week. "Sunday Is at least Incidentally rec-1 ognlzed In the Federal constitution by I the clauso in Art. I, Section 7: " 'If any bill shall not be returned I by tho president within 10 davs (Sun day excepted) after It shall have been presented to him, the same shall bo I a law In like manner as if he had ! signed It.' ' "b1 "cut im-i'is on sununy, except of necessity at the close of tho short term. The president is never inaugurated on Sunday. The supreme and federal courts are closed, if tho Fourth of July falls on Sunday the observance of it Is put off till vionday. The revised statutes of the United States sustains the observance 01 sunnay m certain particulars the cadets at West Point and Naval i Academy students aro exempted from 1 study on Sunday; nke the Fourth of I July and Christmas day, Sunday is excluded from the computation in cer-1 tain bankruptcy proceedings, and pro vision Is made that army ehaplnlns i shall hold religious services at least i once each Lord's day. (Dr. Schauf, ' Horn. Rev., December, 1887.) "In order to present facts and not theories on the subject I solicited answers to the following questions I from representative men in the varl-1 ous states on the coast: The Questions. j "1. Wherein does tho Sunday ques tion differ on this coast as compared with other sections the East or in terior? "2. Are the Maws defective.' "3. What is the commercial and pub lic sentiment in your state or city? "4. What are the most common methods of Sabbath desecration? "5. What efforts have been made for reform, and with what success? "C. What is the problem relative to the Sunday question, and the out look? "Over a score of responses were received from California, Idaho, Wash ington, Nevada and Montana. In answer to the first question three tes tified that there was not ranch dif ference. "Not as much as some East ren people are fond of asserting.' But the large majority declared that there was. on the Pacific coast, more open Indifference and carelessness, less regard for the Loid's day, less reverence for all things sacred, less disposition to formal observance In religious circles, and more laxity on the part of professing Christians In all religious matters. Several inti mated that the temptations were greater becauso of opportunities, en vironments and public opinion. Three or the states on this coast, or the Northwest, having no Sunday laws, would In itself make tho question a . distinctive one with us. Laws Are Inadequate. Tn' almost unanimous testimony i from the states of Washington and 1 Oregon is that tho laws aro adequate. J hut far from being observed. "As to commercial and public sen timent, a few believe that It is op posed to restriction In Sunday games and business. Several testify to the prevalence of indifference. Hut the majority believe that the commercial interests represented in legitimate business aro favorable to restraints. Pretty solidly in favor of a da of it-st.' is the testimony of a leading San Francisco pastor. The general opinion seems to be that tho commer cial sentiment Is In advance of pub lic sentiment, but business men lack the convictions necessary to aid In i the enforcement of laws. It is grati fying to know that In Nevada labor unions insist ou having Sunday as a j day of rest, or free from toll. I Sabbath Desecration.
