PACIFIC RATE WAS
COMPANY FINANCED BY
CHINESE BEOAN FIGHT.
Charters Are Being Sln4 for Un-
precodentedly Lo,v Freight Rates
From the United States and British
Columbia to Asiatic Porta.
Portland, May 12. The rate war in
Tra&a-Paclflc trado is actually on, tho
uri gun oemg nrea yesterday by the
China Commercial Steamship Com
pany, which made a rate of $4 per ton
on a lot of 1000 tons of flour from
San Francisco for Hong Kong. Tho
news was promptly wired to this city,
as well as to Seattle, Tacoma and
Vancouver, where It Is probable that
similar cuts will bo made, although
tho local officials of the Portland &
Asiatic lino state that they have not
yet decided on a course of action.
The Pacific Mall was prompt to take
up the gauntlet thrown down by tho
Chinese company, and an Associated
Press dispatch frotu San Francisco
reads as fbllows:
Pacific Mail Stands Pat.
"San Francisco, May 20. When tho
big liner Siberia, of tho Pacific Mall
Steamship Company, sails from this
port for the Orient on her next trip,
she will carry freight at a cheaper
rate than ever before.
"The appearance of a new compet
ing trans-oceanic line Is the cause of
this most recent move by the Pacific
Mall people. It is evidently their pur
pose to begin discouraging the com
peting lino before it gets fairly start
ed. The agent of tho Pacific Mall
Company has announced, unofficially,
that rates would be so cut that a ton
of freight could be shipped to tho
Orient for $4. By carrying the freight
at this rate It is hoped that tho now
rival company, the China Commercial
Steamship Company, will be unablo
to compete. The new company will
have three new steamers of 5000 tons
each built expressly for them In Eng
land. The compauy is financed en
tirely by Chinese."
PRE8BYTERIANS GATHERING,
Seven Hundred Commissioners and
Thousands of Visitors Present
Los Angeles, Cal., May 20. During
the last 48 hours commissioners to
the General Assembly ol tho Presby
tcrlan church, which convenes In
Emmanuel church tomorrow morning
have been coming In, and at noon to
day nearly all of those who will at'
tend are in the city. Many delegates
from the East came in oy special
trains. Every arrangement for the
comfort of the 700 commissioners
and the numerous other visitors has
been completed, and the spacious au
dltorium of the great church which
commands the admiration of all, is
ready for the moderator to take his
seat and deliver tho opening sermon
The gathering will be a coamopoli
tan assemblage, for full-bloded Indians
will sit side by side with missionaries
from Air lea, India, Mexico, Slam
China and the South American repub
lics, and the blackest of the colored
race from the South wul fraternize
with the leaders of religious thougnt
in the North. About one-third of the
delegates are guests of hospitable res
idents of the city, while the remain
der are quartered in the leading ho
tela.
The reports of a score or more of
committees arc to bo presented to the
assembly, and the members of these
are hard at work today completing
their labors. This evening there will
be a general assembly prayc meeting
a preliminary to the convention
proper. The choice of a moderator
Is still a matter of speculation, though
the contest does not appear to bo so
spirited as some of those In formor
years.
Candidates for Moderator.
Among those already on the field
are Rev. Henry Van Dyke, D, D., of
Princeton, the retiring moderator;
Rev. Dr. Robert F. Coyle. of Denver,
who is the leading candidate for mod'
crator; W. C, Mateer, a returned mis
sionary from China, whose name Is
also mentioned In connection with the
election of a moderator: Rev. Dr,
William H. Roberts, of Philadelphia,
stated clerk, and Rev, Edward II.
Hodge, of Philadelphia, tho corrcs
ponding secretary.
An interesting fenturo of the sunt
ering will bo tlin reading of the rC'
Dtrts of the presbyteries on the sub'
ject of the revision of the creed. The
presbyteries have voted to approve
the action of the assembly on re
vision, so that the reading of the
result will bo merely perfunctory.
There is a possibility of some one
Introducing a resolution touching tho
subject before the report Is made,
which would bring the question on
the floor for discussion, but the gen
eral opinion is that it will be passed
by quietly. A large delegation from
Cleveland, headed by Lewis H, Sev
erance. Is on hand In an endeavor to
have that city chosen as the next
rr-eetlng place of the assembly.
Arrangements at Tacoma.
Tacoma, Wash.. May 22. President
Roosevelt Is scheduled to reach Ta
coma at a late nour this aucrnoon
and will be received by a police and
military esrort. After a drive through
the North End the president Is ex
pected to deliver an address at
Wright Park. Tomorrow morning the
presidential party will embark on a
Sound steamer and be conveyed to
the naval station at Bremerton and
later to Seattle. Tho special train
will be run empty from this city to
Seattle.
