First Annual Tournament of Neigh, boring Sportsmen's Association. The .Athena Sportsmen's Assocla' tlon will hold its first annual tourna- ment at the range in that city on June 5-5. The tournament will consist of 21 regular events and one consolation event, and has $155 In added money. The entry fee will bo SI, except In the 21st event, which Is an event of 25 singles, with unknown angles, and the entrance fee for this is fixed at $2.50. Pendleton sportsmen will attend this tournament en masse, and the Athena club has prepared to accom modate a large crowd on these dates. Shooting will begin at 10 o'clock each day. Targets will bo sold at 3 cents each. There will be shells for salo on the grounds. The Inter-state rules are to govern. Grounds will be open for practice on Thursday after noon, June 4. Too Much Liquor Aggravates Domes- . tic Infelicity. r Charles Hanson was arrested latd yesterday afternoon by Officer nrown for creating a disturbance at his homo on Bast Court street. Roth Hanson and his wlfo were somewhat under the influence of liquor, Mrs, Hanson having had three drinks, according to her testimony. Tho man of the house had had .many mora than that and acknowledged that he liked it and couldn't help satisfying bis desires. The wheels of domestic bliss be coming clogged, tho couplo thought to clear tho machinery by hurling rocks at each other, and their arrest followed, Hanson was locked up in the city jau and this morning given a three day sentence. Mrs. Hanson was al lowed to go yesterday aftornoon and appeared at tho court this morning to ascertain what disposition Judge Fitz ueraiu intended to mako of her. NEW BA8EBALL LINE-UP. With tho new line-up the local fans are confident of victory. COUNCIL MEETING. Ordinance Passed Authorizing Sewer Contract Liquor Licenses Granted. The special council meeting which was sot for -I o'clock yesterday after noon came off at last, but not on schedule time. One of the council- men had discovered some water In a well he was digging and was so over- Joyed that he staid and watched it rise until near the hour of 5. At last ho appeared, breathless, to tell his talc and make a quorum. Mayor Halloy called tho meeting to order, and Aldermen Clopton, Dick son, Johnson. Hartman, Sommer villa and Hnlley responded to roll call. The draft of an ordinance having been prepared by City Attorney Car tor, It was Introduced by tho ordi nance committee and passed. Tho ordinance authorized the city to em ploy the J. H. Sutherland Company, of Walla Walla to construct the eight miles of sower proposed by the city. In accordance with the plans and specifications made by the city en glneer, nnd fixed the bond of tho company at the amount of the con' tract $21,249. At the conclusion of the business relating to tho sewer construction, tho council granted a liquor license to C. J. Mrs. Sarah uoyer. widow of the late John F, Boyer, died at her home In this city yestordayy, aged 77 years, For more man w years Mrs. Boyer had lived in Walla Walla, most of the time her husband being a prominent and wealthy business man. Mr. Boyer was one of tho promoters of tho Baker-Boyer National Bank, of this city, tho oldest national bank In Washington. Mrs. Boyer was a sister of Dr. D. S. Klnsell, sheriff at Santa Fo, N. M.. to the effect that Alf Cofer. alias Alf Hawloy. wanted In Umatilla county for the robbery of tho Kentucky saloon nt Freewator, August 13. 1002, had been taken to the New Mexico penitentiary on May 13, to serve a life term for miinier. This sentence brings to a c'.ose th carper of a well-known Eastern Ore gon desperado, and shows tho some times unerring and dogged pursuit of the officers of the law. On the night of August 13, 190 two men entered tho Kentucky saloon at Freewater and at tho point their guns robbed H. Key, the proprl etor, his bartender nnd three custom era of SI50. Then taking some wni key, they left the place and disap peared. Sheriff Taylor at once went to tne scene and started in pursuit of the robbers. On the same night two men had held up a Swcdo In an adjacent town, and come across tho mountain, These men answered the description of Cofer and his companion and Sher- Iff Taylor scooped them in. They proved to bo the wrong men. and by tho time the posso got back on the trail the bandits had made a get away, but not before wounding Tay lor's deputy, Scott Ritchie, In tho leg. This was three days after the rob bery. and the men had taken refuge In n sheep herder s hut. Taylor was about an hour late In arriving on the scene from his trip In with tho other prisoners and before he could reach the scene the battlo had been fought and the escnpo made. Cofer and his companion now tils- appeared and nothing was heard of them for a long time. At last Taylor read of a robbery In New Mexico and wrote the sheriff nt Santa Fe. Thl was about six weeks ago and the let ter was mislaid. Taylor again wrote, enclosing a plcturo of Cofor, and yes- torday received a lettor In reply. Cofer and an unknown companion had held up a Santa Fo train in New Mexico and Cofor wns caught. While In Jail he and a Mexican prisoner killed the Jailer In an attempt to cs cape, but the effort was balked and both the men brought to Justice. The Mexican was hanged and Cofer taken to tho prison to commence the service of a life sentence on May 13. Cofor had served time in tho Salem Institution in 1900, and has a criminal record In Washington nnd California, Ho was raised in Pendleton and vl clnlty and has relatives in this conn try now. He was a desporato chnr- acter, always drinking and In trouble and the last chapter In his career comes as a welcome relief to tho of ficers of the country. ECHO CANNERY STOCK. H. C. Arrangements have been made with Echo parties to deliver 1,000 dozen rabbits, on demand, at $1 per dozen, stock at par value of $1 per share to do taken In payment for this number. These rabbits will dress 2V nounds each, and the canned meat Is sold nt 30 cents per pound, making a clear gain to tho company and Investors of 20 cents a pound, or $6,000 on this 1,000 dozen. It is tho intention of tho company to put in a steam plant lust as soon as sufficient encouragement Is shown to warrant this expense.
