GROWING
CROP CONDITIONS EXCELLENT
IN EASTERN OREGON.
Very Little Fall Wheat Reseed'ed
Rain Badly Needed In Harney and
Malheur uiaht Showers In Uma
tills and Union Counties.
Fine growing weather prevailed
during the week In tho Willamette
valley north of Lane county anil
along the coast. In Ijtne county,
Southern Oregon, and In all sections
east of the Cascades, the weather has
been too dry and the nights too cool
for rapid growth. Frosts have oc
curred frequently In tho dry sections.
and they have probably done consld
erablo damage to fruit, early varieties
ot whicb, are now In bloom In Eastern
Oregon and late varieties In Southern
Oregon. Along the coast and In tho
Willamette valley, north of Linn coun
ty, reports all Indicate excellent fruit
prospects. In l.lnn county the fruit
outlook Is good, except that a few
correspondents report damage to cher
ries, caused either by blight or frost.
Fall wheat continues thrlftv nncl
promising. Spring wheat Is coming
up siowiy. The only reports of dam
age to the grain cron come from
Sherman county, where some reseed-
mg has been done on account of In
jury by cut worms. Pasturage Is
now generally good, nnd clover, al
falfa and vetch have madu good prog
ress, Timothy has made a rather
slow growth.
Hops generally are doing fairly
well, but the crop Is quite uneven;
some yards being forward, while
otners are quito backward. Com
plaints are more numerous than usual
regarding missing hills. Corn nlant.
lng is nearly completed, and Hold po
tatoes are being planted, hardens
are In excellent condition.
Columbia River Valley.
Dufur, Wasco county, Alex Strach
an. Fore part of week warm, latter
part cold with high winds; frost on
morning of 7th; no damago to fruit;
spring sown grain now showing green
and fall grain has made good growth;
summer fallowing nearly done; good
rain would be beneficial.
Grass Valley, Sherman county, Geo.
it. iiournin. ran wheat very hack
ward; considerable portion of It has
been sown, and some left Is ver;
thin; cut worms have done some
damago in places; spring wheat look
ing well, lint late; farmers Just about
finished seeding; sharp frost Wednes
day night, but have heard of no dam
age done.
Condon, Gilliam county, John F.
Keisacher. Weather very favorablo
lor crops; spring wheat nearly all in
and most of it up; the ground is get
ting dry, and rain would bo benefi
cial; season very late, but prospects
lair for good crops.
Douglas, Morrow county, II. V.
Grable. First or week warm; latter
part cold, with high winds; crops
backward, but otherwise promising.
Milton. Umatilla county, F. A. Slkes.
Warm early hi week; changed to
cooler on Wednesday, lollowed by a
light shower; crops looking well, but
Iu need of rain; somo fruits slightly
damaged by cold; pastilles need more
rain.
Plateau Region.
Imbler, Union county, I.. Hillings.
Warm days and cool, frosty nights;
fiuit trees in bloom; grass and pas
ture growing slowly; some few fields
of beets are up nnd have a good
stand; heeding still In progress; se
vere wind Wednesday; soil dry.
Owyhee, Malheur county, J. SI. Har
ris. Warm and dry; ruin badly need
ed; range Very poor. Irrigating In
progtess; alraira is growing llnoly;
prospects favorable for fruit.
Klamath Agency, Klamath county,
Geo. W. I.oosley. Weather warm and
dry; rain needed, grass growing nice
ly; meadow giass about six Inches
high; stock on the ranges arc getting
about all the feed they can eat ; horses
