Gurdane & Ak Broom FOR A CELEBRATION COMMITTEE APPOINTED AND PLANS DI8CUSSED. Progress Club Also Takes Steps to Attract and Hold Immigration- Discusses Printing and Circulating One Hundred Thousand Circulars. The Pendleton Progress Club held a very largely-attended and enthusi astic meeting In the council chamber last ovenlng. Various planB wore pro posed for the proper observance of the Fourth of July, and committees were provided for to arrange the va rious details of the celebration. The club authorized President It. Alexan der to name the various committees, nnd ho now has the matter under con sideration, ire will appoint men who will spare neither time nor effort to make tho affair a grand success. The place of holding the celebra tion was thoroughly discussed, and it was decided to have tho bulk of tho ovents on Main and Court streets. It is tho intention to have an all day program and If tho matter can bo arranged there will bo a grand ball In the evening. The matter of seating the women and children was discussed and tho placing of scats along both sides of Main and Court streets In tho busi ness district, was generally advocat ed. Several of tho members present advised tho committee In charge of tho comfort of tho guests, to placo good drinking water, or lemonade nt convenient places whero tho women nnd children could quench their thirst. The matter was argued, but not definitely BCttled. During the latter part of tho meet ing, after the different features of the celebration had been discussed, May or T. 0. Halloy addressed the meet ing on the retention of the coming flood of Immigration. Owing to the lack of advertising Umatilla county Is losing the benefits of the immigra tion from tho East now under way. The homeseekers pass through Pen dleton because thoy do not know of our resources and the desirability of a location here. Wo should print a large number of circulars, Illustrated with tho principal features of tho country, and sow them broadcast over tho East. If tho people seeking homes knew of tho advantages to be gained by a residence here, they' would not pass us by, but would stop and become permanent and de sirable residents. Tho club ordered a committee con sisting of L. G. Frazier, Joo Hoch and Fred Nolf to bo appointed to confer with the Commercial Acsoclatlon on tho matter and recommended that 100,000 Illustrated circulars be print ed for distribution.
