The first requliement of commer cial trout culture Is a good supply or cold running water, which must bo under perfect control. In the neigh borhood of Capo Cod tho conditions appear particularly fovoiuble. If wo may Judge from tho number and pros perity of tho trout farms. Ono man started with tho slender equipment of 1000 fry In 1894. Today ho has four separate farms, containing altogether two and ono-lialf miles of troughs, or "ponds" as they aro called, in which to keep the lish. Besides this ho has several hatcheries aud packing huus es, and no less than three gasoline engines for chopping food for tho llsh, Each trough, which Is about 140 feet long by eight loot wide, contains from one to two feet of water, and holds 5000 fish averaging eight inches In length, tho total number or fish on the place being nearly half a million.
