Hall's Family rilla are the best S 00 L ELECTION PENDLETON WILL VOTE AGAIN NEXT MONDAY. The Proposition to Bond the District for $25,000 to Erect New Buildings Seamlngly Not In General Favor. In order that the public may know some of the reasons advanced for nnd against the voting of bonds for now schoolhouses, next Monday, bov oral representative men have been in terviewed on the subject. The fol lowing aro mostly from tlitse oppou ed to the proposition: Leon Cohen The proposition ought to pass, and tho board afterward see to it that the district gets value re ceived for the money expended. If the board spends the money this prop osition allows them, as It should, I will ho satisfied. F. W. Vincent The best Interest of tho schools do not demand that this proposition carry this year. Every available Interest of tho schools can bo conserved for another year with out this proposition carrying. Ab a matter of policy, I am opposed to this proposition nt this Juncture. Let mo say to you that script at (! per cent will bo n more economical way to raise money than bonds with com pound Interest that Is only 5 per cent. Let us Issue warrants. If need be, to get money, that will be negotiable at home nnd of current circulation. We now have outstanding $13,000 school bonds tor which theree Is no sinking fund, and I regard It In the light of tho past, practically Impossible that a sinking fund can be laid by for this present Issue of bonds. If wo couldn't do It for the $13,000 issue, in all probability we cannot for this. This Is no retlectlon upon the present hoard or upon their successors, who ever thoy may he, hut It Is a conclu slon arrived at from a study of the past. In any event, an Issue of script Is the moro economical. Same Old Dose, F. B. Clopton Tho proposition now before the voters is tho same nause ous dose the first proposition had fixed tin for us. but with a sugar coating to try to disguise tho taste Every good reason for opposing tho first proposition applies to this. lie sides, this is the wrong time to select sites to build, the town being In a formative period and we not knowing where to put buildings so as to Insure having them where they will ho want ed at a later period In the city's growth . Further than this, the pres ent Is an expensive time to build on account of the cost of labor and ma terial perhaps the most expensive in the lives of any of us. 1 believe In postponement. Lot Livermore The presont propo- Itlon discriminates against tho north side, but that Is noi enough. Further more, we do not, In my opinion, want the old schoolhouso on Webb street discarded, because It can be repaired at a comparatively slight expense and be made a very serviceable, com fortable building for some time yet. Will Be a Big Burden. E. D. Boyd I seldom am In favor of bonds, and just now a bond issue u this district Is less desirable than over. It should be remembered tiat however large or small a bond Issue the money raised by It cannot be expended for anything else than the specific purpose stated In the propo Itlon. This condition tics up the en re amount, though contingencies Ight arise making the use of tho en re amount Inadvisable. Let us re member that at Ii per cent the dls trlct will have to raise $1,250 per ar interest on the proposed bonds. hlch amounts In 10 years to $12,500. my humble opinion, that $l,2u0 per year ought to be available lor something else than interest merely. bond Issue Is too often liable to o from everlasting to everlasting, as our present school bond indebtedness Illustrates. Surely it seems to me e ought to bo able to meet the re quirements of the present hour with out another bond issue, which I fear ill be a dead load to our already heavy taxation. Another feature of the situation Is that by tlclng up so much money in tho east end wo are working nn Injustice to tho west end. really think the schools will be in equitably distributed by the arrange ment. This is not a criticism oi wie board as a board or as Individuals, but of a proposition, Any further in debtedness is liable to prove so oner ous as to retard the schools and the population both. In the event of a panic or any considerable tightening of the money markets, a condition which many far-seeing men are afraid Is not far ahead, people aro liable to avoid a town whore the taxes nre high, and find if they can, a town whole the taxes are lighter. The ex ample of certain other cities In the Pendleton class should cxclto our sympathy ami not n desire to emu late. Proceed Cautiously, ,1. H. Ualoy We had best pass up the proposition for this year. The dis trict had better follow the policy of the business men nnd proceed cau tiously, the Indications being that the times In genera lare liable to be closer after awhile. The Inconvenience of getting along without additional school 1'ncllltlcs is liable to burden us less than the increased taxation, espe cially should there bo a subsidence of the present generally prosperous con dltlons. I favor all the expansion of our school privileges we really ought to have, but really think we ought to try to get along another year, more or less by repairing and In other ways making the best of tho present condl Hons. If thd tax he voted, tho schools will get my share of the tax without a grumble, but conservative business judgment Inclines me to tho opinion New Babies in Town Just arrived, the new style Baby Upright Piano nt :-: THERKELSEH'S PIANO HOUSE, :-; 315 East Court Street.
