What Is to bo done for the redwoods of tho Pacific Coast la a question that has not only acitated California but la of sentimental conrern to the whole nation. The bureau of forestry, at' tacking tho problem In a thorouRhly practical spirit, has worked out con clusions that should anneal as reason able at once to the lumbermen, who cut retiwooil on account of its com mercial value, and to those who wish this ancient and marvelous type of tree growth preserved. Tho results of this studv are Riven In "Tho Itedwood," bulletin 3S of this bureau, by It .T. Fisher, recently Is sued by the department. Tho Redwood forests are. In point of merchantable yield, probably tho densest on earth, many stands yield ing lKO.OOO hoard foot to the acre: nnd redwood logging represents thr highest development of tho lumber ing business that has ever been at tained on the l'ncllio Coast. Tho total supply of redwood Is estimated to be 7i" billion feet. The amount cut in 1000 was 300 million feet, with a value of ?3,0 iri.fiOS. Although only one-tenth of the forests of the United Stntes Is owned by lumbermen .ac cording to the last census, one-llftli of the redwood is In their hands, and the stands they own aro the hand somest and most valuable In the red wood belt. Ever since the Spaniards began to cut redwood along San Francisco hay. the range of Its growth has been di minishing; It now occupies an area of about 2,000 square miles. During the last iiO years several hundred thousand acres of timber have been cut over, and tho good lands put into cultivation or turned Into pasture, As year by year the redwood forests have dwindled, it has come to ho pretty generally believed that the tree Is doomed to extinction. Tills popular Idea that the redwood lias no chance of survival Is not well founded. The studies of the bureau of forestry have proved that possibil ities of a new growth of redwood after the old trees have been removed are excellent. Given half a chance, the redwood reproduces Itself by sprouts with astonishing vigor. Measure ments taken by tho bureau on cut- over land show that In 30 years, In a fair soil nnd a dense stand, trees will lie grown It! inches In diameter. ) SO feet high, yielding 2000 feet board ! measure to the acre. ' With the kno'wledge that the red- , wood as a type need not become ex- I tlnct. It Is possible to consider the impending fate of tho giant redwoods in the Old forests with n more chcer- fill mind. .Occasional parks and recre ation grounds, such as the Ulg Basin ! Iledwood Park of the Santa Cruz mountains, may preserve small areas 'of virgin redwood lands; but the richest, the. densest, the most bentitl till of the forests are owned by lum bermen, and will Inevitably bo cut. The trees represent capital Invested ; they are merchantable and will yield a iiroflt now small as it is. Besides, In the virgin stands most of them arc growth put on cry considera tion then, Induces the redwood lum bermen, reasoning fiom his stand point, to out his trees. Realizing that the rate of the old trees can not be stayed, tho bureau of forestry, Instead of wasting Itself In attempts to check the cutting, con fined Itself to proving that It Is worth wlille to the lumbermen to do less damage to tho young trees In logging virgin redwood lands, and to hold such lands for a second crop. The study made concerns Itself with young ' second growth, rather than with ma I ture trees; with timbered areas rather I than with the virgin forest. Where attention Is given the old forests and I methods of lumbering, It was only that a better knowledge might bo i gained of second growth and how to deal with It. , The bureau's Is the llrst systematic . ,.,,,.1.. ..a i ..i i.... piuuy ui ine h-iiwimhi tjvtir iiiiiiui taken by a forester, and It has made clear several polntB about the life and habits of the tree that are little known.
