Mntlock will build this summor at tho northeast corner of Court and Garden streets that will bo out of tho ordinary, will he the concrete foun dation. This Is known as tho "hollow brick" material, though the material is neither brick nor is It hollow. Mr. Mntlock believes tho "hollow brick" concrete work to be Just what It Is topresontod to bo and will show his faith in it by putting n two-story brick building upon a foundation made of it. One-half of tho first story of the now building will bo occupied by the ofllces of the Electric Lighting nnd Power Company, and the basement nnd renr of the promises will be used for storage by the company. Mr. Mntlock will occupy the second story as a residence. It Is not yot known who will occu py one-half of tho first story. Tho building will bo 50x76 feet in size. On that occasion 10 or a dozen high schools, academies and colleges will compete which are in the territory between Colfax and Pullman on tho north nnd Baker City on the eaBt. On the same date, May 8, also nt Walla Whlla, and under tho auspices of Wliltmnn College, will occur an interacndemlc athletic meet which will be participated In by representa tives of probably all the institutions represented in tho debate. Another very Interesting feature of the double bill presented at Walla Walla is that Whitman College will entertain both the athletics and the orators. the cost Is very smnll. For a dollar or two paid to Mr. Forshaw or some other person, there can be enough flowers obtained to beautify and make attractive any home In Pendleton. Great efforts arc being made preparation for tho lncrensed demands upon the facilities of tho road. The tour of Inspection which Mr. McCnbe nnd J. G. Cutler nnd W. C. Marlon of the engineering and construction de tmrtmcnts nre now making has a dl rect hearing upon the problem of how to hnndle the rapidly Increasing ue mnnds upon every department of the road. One of tho most Important features of the situation Is that the structural and miscellaneous steel supplies for the comploto remodeling and in many Instances rebuilding, of 35 brides- largo nnd small has been ordered. About 14 months must necessarily olnpso bofore all the proposed work can be completed. It means the ex pendlturo of many thousands of dol lnrs moro than the regular uxpendi tures of the company during tho period tho work 1b being prosecuted. Of Immediate interest to the people of Pondleton is the fact that the steel for the completion of tho rlvor bridge at this point has been shipped from Edgemoor, Delaware, nnd will prob- ably bo delivered within 10 days. Work upon the completion of this bridge will begin Immediately upon the arrival of the steel, or vory soon thereafter. Mr. McCabe says, "Watch and see tho prettiest bridge In TJma tllla county finished before long." Mr. McCabe was reticent about the proposed Walla Walla & Dixie branch stating that ho preferred to say noth ing for publication until the details for tho prosecution of tho undertaking had been nrranged. Mr. McCabe re ferred to the fact that from Pasco to Waliula President Roosevelt will ride over tho W. & C. R. This settles a mooted detail In regard to the persi dent's route in this locality. In nnswer to an Inquiry touching the Improvement on Wobb street. Mr. McCabe stated that the material for planking the street has been ordered and the work will be begun In a short time and completed with dispatch. PUBLIC PARADE.
